GREAT professor! By far the most passionate and clear one I have ever had. The essays were easy, the TA's told you exactly what to write for each prompt. Final prompts were given ahead of time. Take this class with Holden!!
GREAT professor. By far one of the most passionate and clear professors I have ever had. Reading isn't necessary and TA's go over exactly to write for papers. Final prompt was given before hand. Take this class!
Really recommend this class. Interesting material, and Holden is a great prof. Reading are necessary because he goes over them in class. Most important thing is go to class, pay attention and take notes. If you do, you'll learn a lot and do well in the course.
Such an amazing professor. Best I have had this year easy. He loves what he does. Very passionate. Lectures were always a lot of fun. His theatrics were awesome. The papers were so much fun to write since the topics were interesting. Amir Saemi is an EXCELLENT TA. Felt very prepared for the final. I recommend this class to everyone. He's hot.
Amazing. Had a lot of fun in his class. He took an otherwise boring subject and made it interesting. He's pretty easy on the eyes, too ;) Not too much reading, one midterm, one term paper, and a final.
Funny. Lectures are online. Papers require ****ting skills or TIME/effort depending on TA. Material is interesting. Reading is helpful but Bennet translations are better, and Holden's own words are better for final. Wants you to shut up ASAP. not afraid to embarrass you in front of class if you talk. very direct.
Great teacher, fair grader, love the accent
Do NOT take 101A with Cotter. You will regret it. Take Thrower's 101A in Winter and Christoffersen's Spring 101B. She is disorganized and unclear in lectures and unable to answer simple clarification questions. When my friend asked her to re-examine a test question, she read his answer out loud in mockery in front of other students. Bad professor.
Great Professor!! She is a bit scattered in lecture but very clear on what was expected of us on exams. (I got an A+) Ability to learn / comprehend the material on your own is essential. Very helpful in office hours, she'll spend as much time with you as you need (TA's were great too!) I loved the course and I'm not really interested in genetics.
The class was interesting but very difficult and tests were WAY too long for the class. She isn't a great teacher, jumps around and messes up and expects you to memorize and understand a very long experiment that is overkill. Doing well relies on you learning/memorizing most material yourself and ability to go to CLAS and ask many questions.
Very passionate about genetics and wants her students to think like a scientist. Her teaching skills are not so great, she is very unorganized. Material was super interesting but test were hard and long. Expect to study very hard and very long. CLAS mandatory to do well. Make sure you know what terminology she'll be looking for on exams. Hard class
She is all over the place in lecture...so scatterbrained and not organized at all. Acts like her students have a prior background in genetics. Slides are vague, tests are way too long and she grades them not according to what you know but whether you phrase things the way she likes. Definitely recommend CLAS to make sense of her madness.
Witty British professor knows the material like the back of his hand.
She was a ridiculous professor. If I hadn't retaken the course with Thrower I would have died in Cristofferson's class. Avoid taking this class with her. I went to every one, read the book, CLAS did the HW sets and still did poorly. She just doesn't know how to teach.
Was not a good teacher. She didn't know what she wanted to teach so she just went everywhere. Mean when you go talk to her about your test. Does not prepare you for 101b at all since she picks the subjects that she likes and not what will help in the next class.
She grades a bit tough, so be careful with your choice of terminology on test answers. Really enthusiastic about the class, and wants to challenge her students.sign up for CLAS fo sho.textbook rarely used, goto class and take notes!!
she's really nice. wants her students to understand the concepts. 2 midterms, both were pretty easy and fair. the final was terrible! avg was 113/200. all of the previous material was all combined into one experiment for over half the final. not a class you can cram for. take CLAS with janal if possible, it'll really help. not a bad prof overall.
this guy is smart, and knows his stuff. the class is very interesting and made me switch from comp sci.he doesnt kiss students asses and when someone comes up with a stupid idea,or challenge,if it doesn't make sense he wont just let it slide like most profs.he'll shoot u down.hard to get an A.I knew EVERYTHING and got a B+.A- on 1st essay, B+ on 2nd
Holden is crystal clear in his explanations - he is also one those professors who has the uncanny ability to anticipate the problems you are having. He can explain away any of the discrepancies between the material and your thoughts. He grades very fairly-his courses are difficult only because the material is difficult and he won't inflate grades
Concise and energetic lectures. Stimulated class discussion well. Humor is desert-dry in the way that only Brits can be. Not given to long, tangential forays like many Phil professors. One of the best the Phil department here has!
The clarity in which he presents the material (not always the easiest material to digest by the way) is second to none. Great lectures, very organized, and very helpful. One of the best professors I have ever encountered.
Professor Holden presented the course material in a very interesting, intelligent manner that made me genuinely enjoy coming to his class. He's a smart guy and he takes time to get to know the students he's teaching. Overall, I would definitely recommend.
This is a professor with charisma and style. His was one of the few classes in which my mind never wandered. Holden really brings dead philosophers back to life. He has a very British sense of humour, and injects dry often subtle jokes into all of his lectures. Great guy, great course, I would recommend him for any *serious* philosophy student.
He is very clear and fair. He does have expectations, but they are reasonable.
