He said he's retiring, but also said he might come back to volunteer teach a class. If you are in the future and see that he is teaching a class, take it! The best kind of old soul out there, extremely knowledgeable and personable. Wish I took more classes with him!
Professor Reynolds is genuinely kind and so passionate about what he teaches which makes learning the material that much more enjoyable and interesting. He is someone with such an interesting life story and so many amazing stories from his field work. Definitely would recommend taking his class and talking to him about his career/interests.
Professor Blurton had interesting lectures, and I enjoyed hearing what she had to say, but it seems like she really did not understand the subtext of a lot of books. Reading the books myself did not match at all with what she said. The final exam also requires so much studying- make sure you actually read the texts or it'd be near impossible.
Prof Reynolds gives a lot of extra credit opportunities so if you aren't doing pass/no pass I would recommend doing the effort for extra credit to easily get an A or A+. He also says what to study for the midterm/final. Technically attendance isn't mandatory but there were pop quizzes in some of the lectures. Attendance was mandatory for section.
Very standard GE. Pretty interesting class and not to hard. Lots of EC opportunities, and theres a review for the midterm and final. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are pop quizzes although he does like to indirectly tell you if there will be one next class. Wants everyone to do well and has pretty interesting content. Would take again.
Make sure to attend class, as she doesn't post what the class covered online. Blurton is super nice and her class is relatively straightforward, but the content is pretty boring and it was difficult to pay attention sometimes. Note down/remember a few main points for each topic/text covered and you should be fine.
Bad class. Lectures basically worthless, you're on your own in understanding the texts. Worst English class I've taken. Knew it wasn't going to be good cuz it's medieval stuff but I was not ready for how poorly run it would truly be.
I was not a fan of literature, but professor Reynolds made this class really interesting. I learned a lot, and he gave a lot of extra credits. There are a lot of readings, but they are all fun to read, and not really technical. Although attendance is not mandatory, he gives pop quizzes in lecture, so be aware of that.
Professor Reynolds' lectures are very engaging and fun, and it's clear that he's very knowledgeable about his specialty. The readings are varied and none are too long. He also offers a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
The fact that Prof. Reynolds has spent so much time abroad in the Middle East makes his lectures particularly interesting and eye opening. The class isn't very hard to do well in and it feels like they know most people take it for a GE. Very interesting and fun GE to learn about Middle Eastern culture and literature!
At first I didn't mind this class and her teaching methods. I really appreciated how much she knew about medieval literature. But after a while it became clear that she was a professor who only cared about lectures and wasn't involved in any other part of the class. My TA, who was super helpful, was my main source of information for the class.
I never like to make review's on professors, but because of these tough times we are facing due to the pandemic, I saw a disgusting side of Professor Blurton. Her grading was extremely harsh, and her feedback was awful. You really see individual's true colors during challenging times. She does not have empathy or sensitivity. I do not recommend.
I really enjoyed having her for medieval literature because I did not think I'd enjoy this class. She is funny, engaging, and brilliant, which was motivating for this class since it was later in the day. Readings may be hard at first, but you get used to them as she gives you plenty of time to read. My TA was also really helpful. Would take again.
Prof is v passionate and a good lecturer! Might get boring, but its worth it to go that's how you learn half the material. the rest is based on readings/books we read, which you'll have to buy. Pop quizzes in lecture sometimes, but if you read you're good. Couple papers, but TAs will help before due date if you reach out. plenty of extra credit!
Professor Reynolds is very kind and passionate about what he teaches. I have never had such a passionate professor and he is very approachable. He gives study guides for the midterm and final and also posts the lectures online. However you should attend lecture as he does give pop quizzes. There is reading but not too much. Highly recommend!
Professor Reynolds really helps everyone succeed because final and midterm are very easy and gives a ton of extra credit opportunities. Very enthusiastic and knows so much and has lived a super interesting life but kind of downplays that. Slight monotone lecturer that can lull you to sleep if its right after lunch but very informative class.
Good professor, makes middle eastern lit as exciting as it can be. He was clearly very qualified to teach the subject and he does it in an entertaining way. He gives study guides which cover everything on the exams and he gives out so much extra credit. Like its so hard to do bad in his class due to the amount of extra credit there is.
Never been more fascinated learning about the Middle East, its literature, and its culture. Dwight is also a great guy who doesnt give off that pompous academic vibe. Lots of extra credit, very clear what will be on the tests. Just do the readings/go to lecture and easy A
Professor Reynolds is one of the best here at UCSB. I highly recommend taking any of his classes, and 32 is a great GE. He is extremely passionate about middle eastern culture/history which makes his lectures super interesting. Not to mention he is a very kind/funny guy. Pay attention and study well, you'll get a good grade.
The Papers are hard, and there is a lot of reading for this class. The midterm asks too many detailed questions. Easy B, but hard A.
Go to lecture and section otherwise you will not pass. The midterm and final are both write in your answers so read the books and take notes in Lecture, he makes what he is testing on very obvious in lecture. Gives pop quizzes usually like 2 questions. He is an awesome professor who makes a class that would be boring really interesting.
He is an amazing professor and you get a lot out of the class. He is very passionate about the material. This class is a mixture of history, culture, and literature of the Middle East.
Professor Reynolds is by far the best professor I've had at UCSB. He is so knowledgeable about Middle Eastern culture and his lectures are always interesting and informative. He is genuinely so passionate about what the content he teaches which makes learning the material that much more enjoyable and fun. Definitely would recommend taking his class
AMAZING. take him and this course, you won't regret it. easy and interesting and learned more than i could have imagined. but make sure to read!
