If you are a comm major you should definitely take a class with Professor Merolla, he has a really insightful and clear view on communication as a field of study and he's a great teacher. Straightforward lectures and assignments, three online exams that are easy to do well on if you take notes.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Merolla gives great lectures and his courses never fail to be interesting and thought provoking. If you're a comm student, definitely take one of his courses.
This is my second time taking one of Merolla's classes and he has to be one of the best professors on campus if not THE best. He is extremely good at presenting and lecturing about the subjects which makes learning genuinely fascinating. He really cares about his students and it's reflected in his organized class format. I HIGHLY recommend him!
Professor Merolla was a great/caring teacher and very knowledgeable about nonverbal communication. Most lectures were interesting but sometimes they could get boring. The quizzes and papers are not hard but you do have to do the work to get a good grade.
Professor. Merolla is the best and kindest professor I've ever had at UCSB! He is very professional and kind. And he is a professor who is very valuable to know. Definitely recommend him!
Dr. Merolla is easily one of the best COMM professors in the department, and personally my favorite at UCSB. Grading consisted of three online quizzes (18% each), a short writing assignment (16%), and the final essay (5 pages, 30%). Lectures were amazing and the readings were relevant. I highly recommend this professor and any of his courses.
I took this course when a portion of the quarter was online and I thought that the online and in-person lectures were both great! The recorded lectures are very well produced and interesting to watch. There were two written assignments and three quizzes which were open-note! Very easy and interesting class and I would definitely take it again.
I am a senior about to graduate and this class was literally my favorite at UCSB. Merolla's lectures are so organized and concise. He is always available after class to answer any questions. The TA-Rebe is amazing she is very accomodating and is always available to answer questions, and is so helpful during office hours too!
This class was taken through an asynchronous format. Each week there are posted lectures and the most is 2 hours. There is a weekly module assignment due which is around 1 page about the lecture and it is simple as long as you follow all the instructions. One final essay around 4 pages and is easy. Recommend everyone take it since it's relaxing
I also had him for COMM89 as a freshman and he is awesome! He transitioned to online teaching well. He is very organized and makes lectures as entertaining as they can be. Had to do lecture module analysis for each lecture but it was pretty easy. You can knock it out within an hour. Then just one final paper that he gives multiple options for.
Merolla is absolutely excellent prof; the best Ive ever had Even during COVID & using Zoom his commitment/excitement for the class is still apparent & it enhances the learning exp Lectures are clear & concise, plus his voice is oddly soothing Class structure made learning effortless He also truly has students best interest at heart 10/10
Absolutely love him!! took his 3 weeks summer class and had 1 midterm and 1 final with extra credit options. The tests were multiple choice and taken strictly from lecture.
He's an amazing professor! He knows how to engage the class and make lecture interesting. He's very smart and seems to be very passionate about the subject. There is one paper, a midterm and a final. All were very easy. As long as you go to class, do the readings on gauchospace and go over lecture slides, you'll do well!
Kindest teacher ever. Great sense of humor, you will never get bored in his class. Always here to help. As an international student, I came several times to him; he always helped me and cared about his students. + you will learn so much, Non verbal communication class was one of the most interesting classes I took! I discovered a lot. Thanks Andy!
amazing professor. new to ucsb. I have a lowkey crush on him because of how good of a teacher he is and how personable he is. He is one of those teachers that are passionate and it is obvious through his rich slides, and tremendous knowledge about what he is lecturing about. On top of all that he is soooo funny in lecture. 10/10 Andy.
Loved taking this class with Merolla, he was clear on what needed to be done and was an amazing lecturer. Class was never boring but the TA's are not that great. Definitely recommend this professor.
With Comm 88 being my first class of the day in my first quarter, Professor Merolla made joining this school way less intimidating. The times I went to office hours were super helpful and the homework actually felt useful in understanding the concept of research. I'd definitely take his class again and am hoping to do so in the future!
Professor Gonzales was pretty intense. She had high expectations of us and taught in a somewhat passive-aggressive way. Her lectures were good and clear, but I felt intimidated by her and the TAs and the research project was daunting. Had to put in a lot of work for this class to get the grade I wanted.
People who do not do well in this class refuse to read the textbook and complain the professor was bad. She was not, she was very nice during office hours and seemed to really care about her students. I didn't attend lectures a lot, but when I was there people seemed to refuse to engage, but she tried to persuade them to.
I'm amazed at how organized the class structure was even though it was 3 weeks and my first upper-division comm (A great start to summer classes). Such an inspirational class to learn how to manage conflict and I learned a lot! I also look forward to taking COMM111 in the fall.
This is not something I normally do, but I have to for Gonzalez. She was by far the worst proffesor I have ever had. She clearly has a disregard for the students as she does not understand how to effectively teach. She uses a lot of profanity and is very vulgar. Unfair grader as well. Stay away from this teacher.
Genuinely pretty awful exams had so many mistakes, pretty hard, and are in person also she had outdated essay outlines and examples so it made writing the essay a bit difficult but the essay is graded pretty easy which boosted my grade pretty high memoize EVERYTHING for the exams if you want a decent grade.
I would not recommend this class. Lectures were not well structured and Prof. Gonzales would ask students to explain concepts rather than lecturing herself. Exams were challenging (D+ average) and she discouraged students from coming to her for suggestions or advice on assignments. Any feedback she gave on the final essay was generic and unhelpful.
Quality of her slides are bad so to get the most info you should go to lecture (not mandatory). Readings can get dense especially if you're behind on them. Tests are MCQ but the final is cumulative, lecture heavy but do the readings. Content is overall interesting but the way it is taught is not. Choose topics that interest you for the papers!!
