professor gonzales is really nice and funny, but her classes are very paper and test heavy! be prepared to write and do a lot of readings. however, her tests are pretty straightforward (just really long). i honestly like her and would take a course with her again!
This class was incredibly boring. Lectures were unnecessarily long and she wasted sm time waiting for ppl to answer the Q's she asked the class. Unfortunately it is a required class for comm but if you can take it with another professor, do that. Not very difficult but midterm and final (MC) are in person. Txtbook isn't necessary, j go to lecture.
While Gonzales is sweet, her lecturers drag on and are a real snoozer. The slides are very vague and you basically have to write down everything she says which can be difficult as she goes on tangents. Tests aren't terrible, but the essays are challenging. Definitely try to avoid.
Probably my least favorite professor I've ever had. Her lectures are uninteresting, and her exams and papers are overly complicated. It's clear that she is only here for research and doesn't put as much effort into actually helping students learn. Save yourself the absolute headache that is this professor and take something else.
One of the least engaging professors I've had at UCSB. Her lectures are hard to pay attention to because they are flat-out uninspiring and boring. She essentially just talks at the class for 75 minutes. Her class is not structured well at all. She seems like a nice person but not a good professor.
Professor Gonzales is not the best lecturer. Her entire course is based off of memorizing information from readings which are usually between 40-60 pages per week of dense material. Not only that but she will change the rubric of her papers despite the syllabus stating stating something entirely different. Unfair grading, boring, and repetitive.
I loved taking Professor Merolla's COMM89 class! The class was engaging, with in-person and video lectures and a TA section, although the final paper was worth 40% of your grade. A textbook is not required for purchase; it is provided as a PDF on Canvas. If you plan on taking COMM89, I 100% WILL TAKE IT AGAIN!
Professor Merolla is the most well-spoken and knowledgeable professor I've had. He knows everything about the course and the subject. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it. The class is easy to understand, and homework is based on completion. The final paper is challenging, but you won't lose sleep over it.
My favorite comm teacher so far. Merolla truly cares for students and goes out of his way to make sure the material is interesting to learn about by tying teachings into present stories/ trends. Tests online and one easy group project that is super chill and done in sections. I would totally take another one of his classes in the future.
I'm not sure why this professor doesn't have better reviews! She is one of the few at UCSB who comes from a similar generation and understands student ideology. Her lectures were very organized and she made her points excellently clear, even telling you each detailed points you need to know for exams. I had a wonderful experience in her course !
Merolla was a spectacular dude. Made every lecture captivating and connected each theory to timely events / references in order for the class to be engaged. COMM 89 consisted of 4 easy online quizzes and an essay. Every section assignment had room for creativity which I cherished most... Easy money A; Merolla was a chiller and a half too.
4 online quizzes, lowest grade dropped. No other final or midterm. 1 paper worth 40% or smth of ur grade that he and TAs help with a lot via structured assignments. Best lecturer I've had at SB so far. Great speaker. His lectures are engaging and funny. Not a hard class at all. Section attendance mandatory
perfect professor
Great professor I really enjoyed his lectures. He made things easy to understand and was very open to feedback. I would definitely have him as my teacher again.
Prof Merolla is great! Some of the theories taught can be confusing and the concepts can get muddled but he is very open to questions and does his best to support everyone. 1 big paper due at the end of the quarter, weekly readings, and quizzes. As long as you go to lecture and watch pre-recorded lectures you'll be fine.
I loved professor Merolla! His lectures were engaging, so it was worth it to attend class, even though he posted his slides. The whole class was structured around a paper, which was about 40 points of our final grade. He gives a ton of time to work on it and lots of room during lecture for questions. You can tell he is passionate about his work!
Professor Gonzales is boring. Her lectures are extremely hard to pay attention to. I have taken multiple comm classes and she is the least engaging out of all the comm professors. She is nice but her lectures are lacking enthusiasm.
Merolla really cares about his students and their experience in his class. He checks in on you throughout the quarter to make sure all is well. He has a few quizzes in his class that are multiple choice and can be stressful if you don't study the notes. Interesting lectures and easy paper prompts. Be thorough and you will be good!
Great class and amazing lectures. All tests are online with days to take it, but they can be challenging. You have to do 2/3 of the papers and those are short and easy. Great prof and interesting class
Class is definitely not easy, get ready to read and take good notes on her lectures to get a good grade on her exams. Her exams were tough however I really enjoyed her lectures and the concepts we learned in class. Her lectures were enjoyable and she seems like a great person overall.
Professor Merolla was great! I loved the structure of the class, grading was very clear, and as long as you go to/watch the lectures and take notes, (open-note quizzes) you will succeed! I found his lectures really interesting, and way preferred this class over Comm 1. This class is what made me fall in love with the comm major.
Professor Merolla is the absolute sweetest! It was so fun to learn about new communication concepts and he always presented them in an interesting and cool way. Highly recommend taking Comm 89 with him if you get the chance!
Gonzales is an awesome teacher and cares about her students, but I think she grades WAY too hard. Her exams are difficult and despite the curve few people got As on them. Lectures are dense and sometimes confusing, but the class topic itself is also complicated. Class is two exams and one paper plus an extra small assignment.
I took this class to retake comm 89 and I really really enjoyed merollas lectures. His lectures were easy to follow and made really good examples and explained the theories really well. I am really sad the class has come to an end because I learned a lot from him and I really liked his teaching style.
