Gives somewhat helpful lectures, also have posted them on YouTube (covers the basics). Tries to help in OH so highly recommend. Shares past exams, which were really useful and somewhat similar to actual ones. Curved the final grade to help students pass. best chem prof by far.
Joseph does a good job at teaching concepts. Chemistry is a hard topic regardless of professor but as long as you do book problems and the practice tests the class is manageable. A lot of material is thrown at you during lectures which can be overwhelming.
Joseph is a vey kind guy, however, did not love him as a professor. He explains the easiest concepts in class and goes over easy problems, and then his exams are extremely complex and much harder than what he taught. Practice exams are useful, book problems not so much. The curve for my class did nothing unless you were failing
Joseph described hard topics pretty easy, but some topics on exams were a lot harder than in class, the practice exams are VERY useful, book problems didn't help me much personally but to each their own. Overall, lectures were very dense, sections were helpful & mostly mandatory, homework wasn't bad, exams were pretty hard but he's awesome sauce
I genuinely adored Joseph. He's notoriously the GOAT and for good reason. He made chemistry feel doable. He sincerely cares about his students and teaches the class so clearly. I did very few book problems but I should be passing the course with a B. Do the practice exams, and actually understand the concepts!! Memorization only goes so far.
if you're gonna take chem 1a, go for joseph or price. joseph took the time to explain concepts from the ground up and made it clear what was going to be on exams. if you want to pass, i recommend clas, ALL book problems, and practice exams, in addition to paying attention in lecture. my biggest tip is to ask for help the second u dont get something
This class was SO TOUGH. I didn't take AP Chem in high school so it felt like I was constantly behind; I strongly recommend taking the Intro Chem (25) if you're in my situation. With Professor Joseph, imo his tests were way harder than his reviews. His class is also slides-heavy, which I realized isn't how I learn best, but to each their own.
chill guy while still being serious and respected. shows care for students and does his best to help them, esp in a class like CHEM 1A thats a lot of students' first legit hard college class. after a medical emergency, I petitioned to take it as an incomplete and he was flexible with when to take the final and waived assignments/points I missed.
I love Joseph hes an amazing professor and teaches in a very structured manner. I would pinch his cheeks and tuck him into bed because he is very wholesome and cute. If I could feed him a bottle of warm milk I would totally comply. Love u goatseph.
Really good lecturer, made the material easy to understand because of the way he explains things.
ABSOLUTE GOAT. chillest dude ever and very funny while being incredibly concise and organized. literally has this class down to a perfect science. everyone makes chem1a out to be super super hard but with joseph if you go to lectures, do the ALEKS, section hw, and practice tests/book problems before exams youll be fine.
Overall a great professor, The lectures were very well taught and the lecture videos were available if needed. Participation was tracked via iClicker and section attendance. Lays out the necessary steps to succeed in his class.
Joseph is the GOAT. He's def the best chem lecturer, I'd watch his recorded lectures on yt even if you're not in his class. Ppl are rating him badly bc the course is hard, but he teaches it very well. Only problem is tests are mc only and 17 questions (so 2 wrong drops you to a B) but he replaces lowest midterm w/ final. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!!
This professor taught the material in a clear and concise matter, and provided plenty of study materials. However, beware of asking questions in class, you will likely receive a condescending response. The tests are extremely short (17ish Qs) which leaves little room for error. Don't waste all your energy doing ALEKs for hours on end.
Professor Joseph was Okay. He explained concepts thoroughly. With that said you have to dedicate a lot of time to his class because the course load is heavy. You have a lot of *optional book problems and readings to do every week. His exams are VERY DIFFICULT too so please make sure you understand every concept well. (Good Teacher/Hard Exams)
Joseph was a great professor and had fantastic lectures. Practice problems are a must if you want to succeed; make sure you understand how to do all practice problems. Understand the core concepts of the course. Joseph also posted past exams which are a great method to practice. He's a very nice guy and is always open to help during office hours.
Professor Joseph is a good and energetic professor, however the class is hard. The exams are difficult, so put effort into doing all his recommended problems.
Prof. Joseph has a clear passion for chemistry - lectures are energetic and engaging, occasionally with cool demonstrations. Previous chem knowledge will not carry you through the course, as it quickly moves past any high school chemistry content. Exams are difficult but fair. The class averages were consistently around 66% for each exam and final.
Considering how INCREDIBLY hard this class is and how little lecture time he has, Joseph does a great job and is amazing at explaining things. He really wants you to succeed. I've always considered myself decently smart but this class DEFEATED me. I dedicated an infinite amount of hours to this class. DO EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF THE BOOK PROBLEMS!!!
Honestly this class is just insanely hard no matter the professor... however to succeed in his class do the reading (seriously) and do all the book problems. Also, its super important to do ALL PRACTICE EXAMS and make sure to use your resources wisely like CLAS or private tutoring. Also trust the curve, i genuinely thought i wouldn't pass but did.
- Lectures seemed comprehendible but the tests were much harder - Review questions and questions in lectures seemed easy but the questions on the test were much harder - I felt there was barely a curve -Funny and nice -Do not recommend if you're not passionate about science/going into a STEM major/ if you're only doing this for your requirements.
Tests are ridiculously hard compared to other gen chem professors BUT I do feel he is a good lecturer and prepares you the best. Prepare to suffer
If you do the Aleks (don't just chatgpt), do the book problems (Ik everyone says it, but he literally pulls questions and puts them on tests. Do them.), go to lecture (iclicker), and study hard, you'll do well. Joseph is a great teacher and wants you to succeed, but you have to put the work in too. Exams make up most of your grade so be careful.
He curved the overall class not exams. Although one of the hardest intro classes Joseph does a great job explaining the concepts all slides are online though there is iclicker. Definitely do the optional book problems because he just changes the numbers. Completely passable class just dont wait till last minute
