It takes a lot to put me to sleep in a history class. But somehow, Professor Marcuse managed to do it. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking a class from him.
Marcuse's lectures can be pretty dull in the first half of the class, and he started using iclickers. There is a lot of work that goes into the class, 2 essays, a long midterm, and the final is a pain in the ass. If you actually read the textbook you will do fine, though. But there's a lot of reading.
Professor Marcuse is an extremely FAIR professor. He cares about his students and does a lot to help them out. He's definitely interested in what the students think and wants a lot of input. Good class. Really nice professor. Not the type of professor who enjoys torturing students.
Very enthusiastic. Class was a little wobbly at times (unsure what was going on) but he was very encouraging and helpful.
If you must take this awful, awful class, be sure to get Jill Briggs as your TA. Far and away the best TA I have ever had (I took the class my final quarter at UCSB), and rather cute. Marcuse is cool, but the class is utter garbage.
Took Marcuse's German history class, it was great. Hist 2C, however, was the worst course I took at UCSB. Utterly worthless. Only people I can imagine learning anything are freshman with no idea what college-level history is. Essentially a historical theory class, no actual history involved. Stick to Marcuse's upper division stuff, trust me.
Honestly a lot of students make him out to be the "intellectual prof" but at least for this world history course he focused a lot of HIS theory of history, gave very sporadic lectures to illustrate his points, and didn't seem to make a huge effort at making a lower-div world history course all that interesting. I've heard his upper-div stuff is fun
This class was very confusing if one wanted to just learn facts. Professor Marcuse spends time talking about big facts and not details, yet sometimes require you know the details. Good man, but confusing teacher
I definitely recommend this professor to anyone interested in world history. He was extremely helpful but his lectures were a little dull. Section helps alot.
On the first day of class, Campbell hall was packed. Now, about 1/3 is filled. The reason? He doesn't teach history! He teaches about GE requirements, methods of studying, and seems to be obsessed with "paradigms". The guys seems nice, but this class is a waste of time. You won't learn anything.
Boring lecturer, but awsome guy. He is very helpful, and you can tell he really cares about what he is doing.
Doesn't teach history, teaches about different ways of studying history. Had to use my own previous knowledge to make connections.
One of the best professors I've had at UCSB--definitely take this class if given the opportunity. Genuinely cares about his students, and the material is really interesting, so the reading doesn't seem like too much. Ask him about the time he got arrested!
This class has a lot of reading and work but is definitely worth it. Every book assigned is interesting and the small class size allows for great discussions and input from this amazing teacher. He is by far my favorite teacher at UCSB and this was one of my most rewarding classes.
