LOVE Prof. Jarrett!!!! His lectures are unskippable they're so funny and informative. He really expects a lot from his students and his class material reflects that. He grades harshly on tests and they're built to be concise, so you can't BS them, but he often curves to help students. Transparent and great, you'll "PARTY" in his class!!!!
Fantastic prof, genuinely the funniest guy on campus, relatively difficult compared to others and demands more from his students. His classes are real preparations for academic study in phil, they demand attentive reading and ability to digest and grasp abstract content. Phil 143 is fantastic. There's a reason all his courses are popular.
Jarrett was great - demanding, very interesting, and fair. Very talkative and a lot of information (not just from him but just the course content too), so you have to go to lectures, take notes, and there are reading quizzes. Graded on 3 tests and a paper, so you have to study a lot and well but can improve your grade as the quarter goes on.
Very kind and funny professor. Lectures were very fun to attend. Reading was sometimes confusing but like another comment said, ended up doing better in the class than originally thought. Exams are very fair.
He is such a fun professor. His lectures are informative and I like to sit back and just listen to him. He has a super organized class, you know exactly what you will be doing. I really liked this course and highly recommend people to give him a chance. There is not a lot of homework!
He's a great lecturer, but he's hyper-fixated on making life difficult for students by removing quizzes before exams and hiding resources, and overall making petty choices that can at times overshadow his passion for the subjects he teaches. I genuinely enjoy his class, but his outdated 'let me make life difficult for you' attitude gets old quick.
Great lecturer, don't fall behind on the readings. The whole time I was convinced I was going to get a B despite working my hardest but I actually got an A. Responds to emails in a timely manner, I will take him again for Phil 130. You can't go wrong with him!
Two midterms, a final, six short papers, and quizzes before each class. He makes the criteria for getting a good grade very clear and the reading material, while heavy, is interesting. TA (Tom) was a very lenient grader and both he and Jarrett were easily accessible. Put in a bit of effort and you're guaranteed a good grade.
hilarious guy. can be somewhat disorganized in his lectures though. he assigns a final paper for every class that's 8-10 pages long and it is easily the most terrible, stressful assignment I have done at UCSB thus far. overall not too terrible of a class though, reading was light and he curves a lot.
So far he is my favorite Philosophy professor at USCB. He has online quizzes before each lecture based on the readings, but these are very easy if you've actually read (which are themselves usually short). So straightforward, has thorough study guides for tests and outlines for his paper. And extra credit on his tests! If you read, you'll pass
Amazing & entertaining professor. Super accommodating and very understanding. Hilarious guy & everyone loves him. He does require attendance, but it is not an issue because I actually loved this class and looked forward to going.
Jarrett Is seriously the greatest. He assigned a very reasonable amount of reading for an upper division class, the readings were interesting, and his lectures were even more so. He's a super funny guy, a fair grader, and he's understanding/open to critique from students. He gave us off days before our final paper and before the final exam. :)
Jarrett was a fantastic professor, really cemented my desire to go law school. His content is wonderful, relevant, engaging, and insightful. One of the best philosopher teachers at this school. Looking forward to taking more classes he teaches! Highly highly recommend even if law or philosophy isn't your career goal.
Jarrett is an awesome professor. You will get out of him what you put into the class. He is funny if you understand the material, and achieving an A is not impossible.
Great professor, very fair tests, very engaging lectures. There are a lot of silly typos on his powerpoints and sometimes his jokes are tacky, but not the biggest deals; I enjoyed taking this class a LOT. The content was fascinating
Dr. Jarrett made this class fun and interesting. The first half of the material was mainly theory and the second half took on concrete cases. The midterm and final was tough and he graded the term paper somewhat hard, but he is very fair and generous when it comes to grading. The amount of reading is reasonable. I recommend this class.
grade is midterm, paper, final, and participation in class and online. midterm was the hardest test I've ever taken and the paper seemed pointless. just spitting back info from book but he is hunting for plagiarism even though we must mostly use the textbook. funny lectures but tough material. this class takes a lot of work.
His class is full of blue hair girls and people with victim mentality, if youre a normal person do not take it your opinion will be overpowered during every discussion.
very funny and interesting lecturer. 2 discussions per week, 2 quizzes per week, (sometimes) short readings, a midterm, paper, and final. content is straightforward and attendance is absolutely mandatory. class content is very useful and applicable in the real world. If you put the work in, it's possible to get an A.
Professor Jarrett is one of the most unique university profs I've ever had. Quizzes before every class and mandatory participation makes the learning environment intense. Jarrett is tough and expects a lot from his students but the outcome is very rewarding: learning the material better and overall more camaraderie in the classroom.
I have mixed feelings about this class. Professor Jarrett is a great Professor in the sense that he is passionate about his subject, and allow for the sharing of a wide spectrum of views. But the grading was awful. The midterm and exams were MC but hard, and your grade has so much ambiguity that it drove me insane. Your grade won't be clear
Awful. just dissapointed. but i did learn a lot
His exams/quizzes are more like a proof for him that you did the readings. is this middle school ? Hard midterm and final. Get ready to read. It is def an interesting class and I learned a lot. But would never take this again or this professor. A little disappointed.
I took this class because he had so many good reviews. I worked super hard and I felt like he was unaccommaded to students during the pandemic. He had a lot of trouble with the technology. As a DSP student, he messed up the tests on GauchoSpace and made it MORE stressful for me, which is the opposite of why Im in DSP.
