My favorite class at UCSB. It is so interesting and the teachers are great. The tests and midterms are not easy, but if you know your stuff you will do really well. I think that everyone should have to take this class because it is so important. TAKE IT! If you are worried, take it with a bunch of friends like me and it makes it even more enjoyable
I have taken 5 classes (152a-b-c, 142, 185) with John. They are all the same format (3 midterms, 1 final, all short answers). If you are taking these classes expecting a GPA booster, don't. If you are interested in actually learning something that will change your life forever, take them all! Must read & attend lectures to get good grade!
extremely willing to help
John and Janice are good lecturers and the class material is interesting. The second half of the quarter was a lot less exciting. This class takes up a lot of time because of the 3 midterms. You have to know everything they cover in the book and lecture to get a good grade. I'd recommend the class because the material is useful and lectures are fun
He and Janice are both great teachers. They are very clear and fair in their expectations and grading. They give a lot of reading, and ur expected to kno it all plus the lecture notes (diff from the readings) for the 3 midterms, plus a cumulative final. It's not an easy class, but if u work at it, ull do very well.
Great professor!!! Taught everything really well with his wife. The tests weren't too hard, just make sure you go to the reviews and study all of your lecture notes! I highly recommend this class!
The class is really interesting and useful. The Baldwins are pretty fun and lecture isn't boring. You don't have to go to lecture if you buy the notes at AS student notes. you are tested on lecture notes. review sessions before each test that are really helpful. i never even bought the textbook and i got an A-. i definitely recommend the class
he is a very entertaining teacher. he teaches human sexuality with his wife, another professor, and they are so cute together! human sexuality was an incredibly interesting class (also helpful for sex life) but you really have to know ALL the information to get a good grade
John is the best professor at UCSB. Period. Those who do not take at least one of his classes are missing out. Take all of them if you can!
If you're not a freshman enamored with the fact that no one's MAKING you go to classes now, you'll hate this class. If you go most days and take notes, and hit the TA pre-test reviews, this class is entertaining and not hard.
Review sessions are extremely helpful. Don't underestimate how cumulative the exam is, most of it is from previous chapters. Don't bother studying previous exams that won't work for the final. There's so much to memorize and when the test comes you'll find a ridiculous qt that you have no idea where it came from. Overall it's an OK class.
John is the most enthusiastic, inspiring professor I have ever had. I have taken 3 of his classes thus far and I just cannot get enough! If you want to get the most out of your education and actually learn and feel motivated about LIFE then take one of his courses and you won't be disappointed! His lectures and courses are designed for success!
He was teaching the class as he goes because all his old material was outa date. Sick class, with guest lecturers almost every week. They were all interesting. Posts all notes, readings, assignments, and study guides online. Ample opportunity for extra credit. Theres a lot of reading every week, but the assignment that goes along is easy.
It is a very fun class, but it's also very hard. You have to memorize tons of STIs and birth control methods. The review sessions are extremely useful. They tells you what you need to know for the midterms and final.
The Baldwins are amazing! They made human sexuality so fun! This is my favorite class at UCSB. I suggest that any freshman or sophomore looking for a general education class should take this class. There is a lot of information to remember but if you go to the TA's study sessions then you should do fine.
Great class! I did not find it hard at all (I am now in the 152 b class). The professors are great, totally amusing! I want to say there are 5 tests, all have a few mult choice and then like 6 essay questions and you pick 5 questions to answer. Then list everything you know about the topic...not too tuff if you go to lecture/review notes!
The baldwins are a great team of professors who are really dedicated to their subject (who wouldnt be) and are very fun lecturers. There is never a reason to miss any of their lectures because they are all very exciting. However, I suggest that they get with the times and use powerpoint rather than slides since the projector always gets jammed
I got a solid A on all three midterms and ended up with a B in the class because of the final, which was way harder than necessary. They were both very entertaining and the class was great. READ THE BOOK and OUTLINE it! The tests are mostly essay questions with a few multiple choice.
I took this class back in 1991. It seems that it has not changed. They show you explicit films for the first few weeks and then tell you how to run your life in a condescending way after the drop date. Abortion, emotional tirades about AIDS and****are emotional/philosophical topics and have NO place in a class about the SCIENCE of sex.
I have taken all 3 of Baldwin's classes offered at UCSB and he is one of my favorites! He has the most passion of every teacher I have met and is so excited to help students and teach. He makes you feel excited about the material as well and his enthusiasm is contagious. The tests are comprehensive but as long as you read thoroughly, you're good!
Great class! Teachers are hilarious together. Just go to class and take notes. Reading helps, but the review sessions can save you from most of it! 3 midterms: about 5 multiple choice and answer 4 out of 5 essay questions. Format's weird the first time.
Very popular, but I don't know why. Teaches like the students are 12, does nto seem to have updated the lectures for 20 years, a bit cheesy. The sex class is not for those of us who are older, it would be a great class for freshman Tests are hard, the format is not short answers but the questions are not straight forward, do the reading
Don't take this class if you're not a freshman and/or know how to put on a condom. Sriously, the class is for prudes. I learned nothing new that I didn't know before. Plus, they are a little creepy...
the professors are very nice, but the class was harder than it should be. the reviews were pointless, and the TAs were not very approachable. study EVERYTHING about aids for this class.
