Great professor. He knows the material and is very well versed on the topics. I will say, learn how to write an essay before you begin reflections. He isn't as clear on his expectations however be as academic as you possibly can be. Treat it as a real analysis paper than an “reflection.”
His minimum reading is at least 100 pages per week and expects us to write a 1000 word essay weekly, which he sets the deadline to be at 10 pm. I get so stressed out every Tuesday. On one of the weeks, he even made us read an entire book of more than 200 pages on top a list of documentaries. Take his class if you are a strong reader.
Robinson…the prof that makes people want to drop out & handles his courses like a dictator. Him & his gang of male TAs are rude, arrogant, & grade harshly with unclear parameters. I've taken 2 of his classes now. He sloppily throws together a 3hr lecture, makes you buy the overly wordy materials he writes for profit, & man-splains til you're blue.
AWFUL PPT maker. BRIGHT green background and BRIGHT yellow fonts. It's very unprofessional, lazy and difficult to look at for a long time. Extremely inconsistent fonts and text sizes (random capitalizations). PPT strains my eyes due to the intense coloring. 5 different fonts in 2 pages, ridiculous, and AI generated images.
HORRIBLE professor. He has very interesting material but teaches in block three hour classes with monotonous lectures over powerpoints. Very arbitrary criteria for the reflections that are then graded by TA's somehow even more arbitrarily. To sum it up, great material and just horrible horrible class structuring and teaching delivery.
This professor clearly has a huge ego problem and was very unaccommodating towards students. That being said, he taught me more than I have ever learned in a class. He truly broadened my perspective every lecture and I looked forward to going to class, which I never had felt before. A lot of work but readings can be skimmed.
a good lecturer, 3 hr classes fly by. However, he claims to be a socialist yet is very punitive and requires notes from doctors in order to get extensions. News flash, not everyone has access to health insurance. Calls out/kicks students out for falling asleep in lecture, failing to realize most students have jobs & are tired for 7-10pm class.
I feel like Prof Robinson was the first to make me feel like I actually LEARNED. He does a weekly reflection on readings, 3 short papers and a lengthy final. (he also offers extra credit) The lecture was 3 hours but it was half lecture, half documentary WHICH were super interesting. I literally see the world different. Loved this class!
Robinson was very opinionated about his socialist beliefs, but he did encourage class discussion. Class was diverse with different materials (articles, videos, lecture materials, guest speakers). There are no tests, but LOTS of essays and readings. I did learn a lot from this class, but wish it had more viewpoints.
Really eye opening course. Lots of topics that normal classes won't/don't cover. Helllllllllla reading. Grading on papers felt subjective based on TA but not extremely hard. Class is 3 hours but usually half includes a movie
This class will teach you so much about the world and you will leave this class as a brand new person each time. He's a great professor and he really knows his stuff. Lots of papers. Reflections every week, 3 short papers & a final paper. But it's worth it honestly. This class is one of the most amazing courses i've taken in UCSB.
Hard class, hard ass. I have watched him call out student after student for falling asleep in class or for using their phones. He will kick you out. But, he does a great ob of balancing lecturing, discussion, and video materials.
Prof Robinson is a highly respected professor. His courses are discussion based & you're allowed to share your opinions & feelings. He won't discredit you or embarrass you. His lectures will change your perspective about the world. There's movies every lecture but they're all really interesting & life-changing. Lots of reading and 3 short papers.
Professor Robinson's lectures were a little dry at times and his readings were sometimes dense, but overall I learned a great deal of information in his globalization course. Also beware of his weekly quizzes!
If you do the reading, you should be fine. But there's a lot of it and it was so tedious most of the time. The least amount per week we had was about 50 pages. extra credit available. Lectures are even more boring, especially since it is not used at all for assignments or exams. you'll either love the class or hate it & for me it was the latter.
The material is interesting, just not the 200 pages per week and the additional 3 books that you have to read. The TAs are also tough graders on the already tough assignments. The directions for the assignments are not clear. The class is 3hrs & iclicker for attendance. I feel it was more the assignments and reading that made the class terrible.
He is a very good lecturer however, his material is quite uninteresting, nothing new from the norms of the school's SOC dept. His TAs' were tough graders on papers. Expect zero use of electronics from all classes now that my class violated his rules. He provides easy extra credit to make up for missing points.
some stuff is interesting, but lectures are really long and boring (3 hours) uses iclicker at the beginning and end of class. one of his quizzes was very ambiguous but he didnt give us the points even after acknowledging the questions were of that nature. read the reviews and wanted to give it a try but it wasn't worth it to me. tons of reading!
Easy to listen to. Doesn't make the three hours drag by like some professors would. He loves to put his own pictures on the slides as well as write in spanish sometimes. Not a hard class but must read, no tests just papers
Love this professor. He is so smart!!!! and you will learn alot in his class. Keep up with the work and you will get an A=)
I looked at the reviews and said NO WAY IM NOT TAKING THIS CLASS but I'm so darn glad I did! He's an AMAZING professor who knows what he's talking about. There are 3 briefs,5 pop quizzes and 1 research paper. EASY. I'm not a good writer. Steven and Pat are awesome TA's! take this class you won't regret it. Most likely will get an A. ps:extracredit
Professor Robinson is intense but cares deeply about the material. While the reading load is heavy, the content is engaging. Utilize unstuck ai and focus on the lectures to succeed.
Excellent proffesor, one of the few at Santa Barbara that actively challenges your critical thinking. His intensity can be mistakened as rudeness, as Robinson really makes it clear that he cares a lot about the content that he is teaching, and as a result, wants to make that everyone is paying attention.
One of my favorite professors I've had at UCSB. I left class shocked every night by all the crazy new things I had learned about history, the government, etc. The 3 hour classes flew by. There's weekly 1000 word reading responses, but they are pretty easy once you get used to them. Everyone should take Robinson if they get the chance!
