I had her for the second half of the quarter for PSTAT10. Her teaching style helped me learn a lot and her slides were clear to understand. The only negative was that the final dropped my grade quite a bit. It wasn't particularly difficult, but I think since there weren't many questions, missing even a few would result in a B.
I was way above A before the final, dropping to A- after it. Professor Ravat is making questions in the way as if she is not intended to check your understanding on the course materials but just to make your grade worse.
She is as beautiful as an angel. She is so kind that it looks like she is sent to us by god. She inspired my logical methodology and enlightened my passion for statistics. Wading through beautiful programming materials provided, I was like a curious child exploring a mysterious but fancy castle. She is the best professor that I have ever met!
This professor is decent. I had her for the second half of PSTAT 10, and thought it was pretty good. I think she put a lot of effort into improving her slides from previous quarters (refer to scores below), and her explanations were pretty good. Multiple choice tests and quizzes for coding are always a bit annoying, but they were okay overall.
I was 93% before the final exam, but after the final, I got 73% in total. Super weird final, please avoid her!!!
She knows what she's talking about, but we don't. Doesn't care about students success and is a brutally difficult grader. I would recommend Mouti instead.
She was inadequate at explaining ideas during lectures, and tried to control our collaboration on assignments when we were left confused afterwards. Her wording on quizzes/exams were tricky and I often didn't know what certain questions asked for. I knew I wasn't alone bc her class forum blew up w questions after a new topic was introduced.
I study pretty hard and am decent at coding before taking this class. But the setup of is ridiculous and you are graded on so few things, it feels like she doesn't want you to do well. It really shouldn't be this stressful. There were so many mistakes in hw and quizzes, and responses are so slow. Even announcements posted will have mistakes.
This professor does not care about her students at ALL. Some questions did not even show up on her lecture slides and you can't review past homework or quizzes for your midterm/final exam. Just don't take her class.
DO NOT TAKE HER COURSES!
The most difficult professor i ve ever had. she is always unclear about the arrangement of the class and the final is tomorrow we still havent got the assigned seat sheet. you never know the answer of homeworks and quizzes cuz the one she posted might also be wrong. AVOID pls.
Tommorow is final but: 1. Failed to mark all the worksheets, quizzes and worksheets before final 2.Still haven't confirm whether there will be short questions, or even WHEN THE FINAL TAKES PLACE, haven't post seats arrangement but insist doing so for midterm and final Worst professor I've ever met for 5 quarters in UCSB, course is easy but prof suc
She sucks. You literally can't email her or points will be taken off your assignments, she hates helping students. F this professor, f this class, f the TAs, literally just wait until someone else is teaching it. Not worth it.
Just do self-study. Don't go to lectures because lectures are of no help! She just reads ppts and rarely explains her contents. Quizzes and exams will include sth. you didn't cover in lectures. Weak connection between lectures and practical work. You'd better be quite experienced in coding to dare to take her courses as letter-graded.
This professor will assign homework that hasn't been addressed in lecture and will never be addressed in lecture, and incorporates random details from lectures that are not related to course material in quiz questions. She is not a good lecturer, so just be prepared to do almost all your learning outside of class.
This was my 2nd class with Dr. Ravat, and it was a much better experience than 120A. She is unorganized and releases too many directions for homework/projects etc. However, she cares about students' success and wants them to leave her 194CS class with the skills to do well in real-life jobs. I would recommend 194CS with her, but not 120A.
Yes, this course is hard, boring, and contains many contents, but Ravat is not as bad as many others say. She is willing to listen to the feedback from students and make changes. The OHs held by TAs and ULA were very helpful. The grade is heavily dependent on the quizzes/ exams.
TBH Ravat's class wasn't too hard, just boring. Her lecture style is comparable to Porter's but her homework/exams are complicated and I only got through it with help from the absolute GOAT of a ULA Patrick Yu. Huge difficulty spike around week 6 when she introduces double integrals, so before week 6 take time to master the basics of her class.
Honestly Ravat is a fairly good professor/lecturer but this class absolutely is brutal. 2/9 homeworks, 1/6 quizzes, and 1/9 quizzes dropped and 10% curve on midterm but none on final or course grade. Homework takes lots of time to write thorough solutions for and quiz problems may expect knowledge not covered in lecture (particularly series).
This professor is terrible, and the quiz is hard, and if you make one multiple choice question wrong, you will get 60%. The homework is literally a lot and much harder than what she talked about in the class. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS.
Personally I think Uma Ravat gets a bad rap. Of the 7 professors I've had in the PSTAT dept she is 1st or 2nd for quality of instruction. 120A is a weeder course. It is not supposed to be easy. 194CS is an Upper Division Statistics class. It requires substantial work outside of class. Follow the hw submission instructions and Pay attention. ywbf
The only people that succeeded in this class were the ultra smart and dedicated. If you want to do well in this class you have to go so far above and beyond what is taught in lectures, which were excruciating to watch. One redeeming fact is that final grades are curved, in my class 68% in the class was good enough for a B-.
I would give a rating of 0 if I could.
Ravat really cares about her students and she listens carefully to everyone during office hours. Lectures are not mandatory. I really like that she switched Quizzes to HW in week 3 or 4, which enables me to get more practices. However, this review isn't persuading you to take her course. Other reviews are not lies. Just be prepared. This is an UD!
