grade was determined by weekly section quizzes, two midterms, and a non-cumulative final with averages around 60-65. exams are insanely specific, the frqs are decent in that you can get half credit but the multiple choice section is impossible. go with another professor for this already difficult class

The most nit picky test questions ever. Her slides are poorly organized, hard to follow and she jumps around often. I learned more watching youtube lectures from other teachers than in her class. She is kind and passionate I will say that, but thats the only good thing about this class. 10/10 would not recommend or take again.

Average scores were 58% and 64% on midterms. I got a 70% and 75% and still got a C+ in the class so the curve is marginal. She only curves at the end of semester after all points are in so you never know what grade you actually have in the class. Just reads off lectures we have no idea what questions might be on exams so rely heavy on section.

Low is brilliant, and nice and funny. But she cannot teach, make a good slideshow, or write a test. This is a hard class, and good luck studying for the horribly written tests with her horrible lecture slides. Luckily, she knows its hard and she curves the average of each test(the averages ranged from 50-60%) to a B-. Avoid this class if possible.

Second time with Low. Overhated in my opinion but she still isn't great. Her lectures are extremely boring and dense, but they aren't in unintelligible. The problem is the MC section on exams, which is incredibly convoluted. Need to know everything she says, puts on slide, and digest the concept as well. Hard class overall with not a lot of prep.

Man Dr. Low is so funny but holy butt does she make her tests hard. Majority of questions on midterm and final are fill in the blank or short answer. Maybe five or six multiple choice thrown in at the beginning. The short answer isn't too bad as she sometimes gives partial credit but man the fill in the blanks would be the most obscure enzymes.

This class was hard work, by the end of the quarter I had about 600 flashcards and hundreds of pages of notes. Professor Low is a good lecturer though, she's funny and is clearly interested in the subject. Her tests are reasonable aside from the occasional question on something she skimmed over. Big curve helps, my 84 became an A-.

Low is funny but lectures quickly & the material is DENSE. Get ready to rewatch lectures & USE ANKI!!! Multiple choice questions are actually from hell tho so good luck. Curve at the end helps a lot (the class average gets curved to a B-)

In-class lectures too dense and fast to accurately take notes, watching recordings is necessary. 1.15 hour lectures became 4-6 hours straight of recorded lecture note-taking twice a week due to 25+ slides of block text and figures that you must know. Exams have horrible point distributions per question and are poorly worded. Quizzes are a coinflip.

Low's lectures are hard to follow and the slides are poorly organized. If you want an A, you will have to write down EVERYTHING she says. Also, the test questions were vague at times to the point where you can't even understand what it's asking you. If Low just organized her slides and put more effort into making the exams she would be much better

During OH, she's really chill and answers questions, but her tests really take you out. They demand an incredible amount of detail with little to no leniency for grading, and definitely not enough time to take it. Tiny things from lecture end up covering huge portions on the exams, so if you miss it, you're screwed. Nice person, not nice professor.

Took her for online fall quarter. She uses pre-recorded lectures that are of bad sound quality and she moves away from the recorder sometimes which makes her thick accent harder to understand. Seemed to be no communication b/t her and TAs for material covered. Pulled review pdfs from many years prior that had info that was not in main slides. 1/10

complete disregard for pandemic. 2 midterm 1 final, equal weightage. tests fully misaligned from lectures. used old live lecture recordings and overlayed with ppt. unresponsive to emails. tried to raise concerns after 1st midterm and was ignored. friends took with another prof and did not struggle half as much as i am. avoid when possible.

The exams were rough.

Exams are definitely challenging. Must memorize and understand all the concepts to do well. Curve is decent though.

Get ready to memorize almost everything learned in intro bio, in much more detail, in 1 quarter -- graders dock points if your answer is not what her key says nearly verbatim, and barely-covered details from the slides will be asked about. Luckily, exams are not cumulative and the textbook is only necessary if her verbose slides confuse you.

Physiology is a pretty easy subject, but she makes it HARD. She's a good teacher and she's really funny so lectures are pretty entertaining but the exams are IMPOSSIBLE. Felt prepared for the first test but walked out wanting to cry. Forget the textbook (you don't need it) and just memorize her slides!!! class ave usually F but she curves.

Get ready to read a textbook per lecture. Her lectures have a lot of information so make sure to organize your notes. All material tested was on the slides. Tests are tricky not because of the material but because of the wording of the questions and answers.

Prof. Low was my most difficult professor at UCSB. She is extremely difficult to understand and talks very quickly. She will mention a word in lecture and expect you to know every detail about it come test time. Lectures confused me more, but there are iclickers. Test averages are always below failing, but she curves.

This class was really not that bad. I consistently did well above the average on tests by writing flashcards for every slide, as well as things she said in class, and memorizing them starting a week before the test. The people who are saying this class is hard are just lazy and don't know how to properly study for bio classes.

The tests are poorly written and focus on memorization more than the larger concept. Tough and inconsistent grading... submit regrades. Section is a journal club and a waste of time but you have to show up because it's 14% of your grade. Memorize every seemingly worthless piece of information on those slides. Thrower teaches it in summer.

Dr. Low's lectures are pretty entertaining and her slides are well put together. For the most part the textbook is not needed. The TA's were not helpful until the final exam. The exams required your ability to memorize every bit and detail on the slides versus your ability to apply concepts. Furthermore exams were harshly graded and get regrades!

This class requires so much time! You literally have to memorize all her slides for each test. Tests are 100% memorization, memorize every single detail! Her TAs are completely useless. Section is annoyingly useless but mandatory.

Here's how I got an A (from an average, non gifted student): hand wrote her slides, hardly went to class(would read on any topics that seemed difficult to understand), and about a week before the exam I'd start memorizing the hell out of my notes. Any additional help I needed I got from the TA's. Test is almost NO application and ALL memorization.
