EEMB2LL . Nguyen A T 3 Years Ago

If I could give her a zero I would. She is by far the worst faculty member I have ever had experience with at UCSB. This class was horribly organized, had unclear requirements, and Dr. Nguyen displayed a complete lack of compassion for her students on several occasions. I was actually excited to this class but this professor ruined it. TA was nice

Class is terribly organized, she doesn't respond to emails, changed grading policy to be harsher mid-quarter during a pandemic, even though the class uses 3 different websites to turn things in, all with different times due which is extremely confusing and difficult to keep track of. She is also uncaring and unsympathetic to student hardship.

literally the worst and least organized professor ever, does not respond to emails, is NOT understanding, changed the grading policy mid quarter to be less accommodating during the pandemic, and is m o n o t o n e

his lectures are straightforward, but his test is too heavily formatted on knowing more than one answer for the question. I feel like this is very unnecessary especially since his topics are memorization-heavy, and his format isn't needed especially during an online class. Stu did better on formatting his questions than clegg did.

The class wasnt well run but not necessarily that difficult besides that. Dr. Nguyen didnt do her PhD in a molecular biology field, which was apparent when she tried do discuss even intro molecular biology topics, and especially more obvious in hindsight as you go on to upper div MCDB classes. Not the same level of quality as other UCSB profs.

This class is super interesting and he was SUPER accommodating during rona time. Study the experiments and think of other ways the study could have been done to do well on the tests. Easily the best prof I had during rona. Gave 24 to take tests and quizzes. Could be done with the class after the midterm if you were happy with your grade.

He is a great teacher, and will test off of the lecture material. If you take the time to meet with him, he will help you and can give helpful insights for grading, what to expect for his tests, and ensure you understand the concepts. He is patient and will explain things ad nauseum if you truly do not understand.

Stu is an awesome teacher and really helps answer questions. He is excellent at explaining and will be patient with you until you understand the concepts. His lectures have lots of information in them so be ready to listen and take notes. Just know that he isn't very good with learning names, but once he knows who you are he will not forget you.

He likes to tell jokes. His exams are very detailed, and the style of the problems is quite unique, which is really effective in testing the actual degree of understanding among students. One must get quite familiar with the material to achieve better grade.

He does not give enough practice problems for students to review, so reading textbook is important. The lecture is good and the exam is normal (especially when comparing with other professors teaching this course).

take detailed notes, rewatch the lectures, and create study guides outlining the approaches to every experimental question and you'll do well.

They changed the format of the bio labs, and I had hoped that they would be better, but in fact, they have become worse! The grading scales are harder, and the lab practicals are no easier than before. Unfortunately there's no way to avoid this class if you're a bio major, so good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor tbh.

didn't even get to know our final exam scores, unresponsive to any emails.

He is one of the best professors I have taken and you can tell he is enthusiastic about the material he is presenting. Take his honors seminar if you can too. His tests are super straightforward just know all the experiments inside and out and how it relates to the question being studied. Only reading is a few articles rest of material is on slides

Totally unorganized, making the material which was clear in lecture more confusing. Many of the questions she writes dont feel fair and her grading policy is rigid for a 1 unit class. If you every have her, Im sorry

The actual worst, she overcomplicates the lab practicals to the point where they're more difficult and time consuming than the actual classes. The lab manual is disorganized and barely corresponds to lectures anyways. Probably the worst person they could have chosen to organize the intro bio labs.

The literal worst, the labs are completely disorganized and the practicals test on tiny details with not enough time to answer the questions. The manual is horrible, and there's no guidance on the research project. WAY too much work for 1 unit.

Probably the best of the three professors teaching the intro series. He usually summarizes the lecture before in the first 10 minutes so its a good review to explain any confusing things. He writes on the lecture slides which is surprisingly helpful. Definitely take CLAS. I recommend Amy Liest. Her packets and review sessions help a lot.

Great professor for the intro series. Material is not too hard compared to the rest of intro bio, but he takes time and explains things in detail. Coll guy.

Feinstein is alright. He is not amazing by any means but he gets the job done and teaches the material in a straightforward way. The tests are also pretty easy and predictable as long as you study. He teaches the first third of MCDB 1A (the biochem section). Goes over material slowly so you can understand everything. Honors section was kinda boring

Teaches the biochemistry portion of MCDB1A. Really good at teaching the material. He goes over material twice so that helps with any loose ends you had trouble with when he first explained it. Midterm was actually very easy (this is coming from someone who sucks at chem). Never went to lecture (watch them online). CLAS is very helpful.

She has written down on the course policies that she gives makeup exams but she doesn't. Says you can contest your grade but when I complained about a grading mistake on my practical (and I'm 100% sure), the staff refused to fix it. Reuses questions she threw out other quarters because 1/2 students got another very close answer.
