Lol don't know why this professor is so highly rated. Half the class dropped after the first midterm. Material was abstract, boring, and useless. You're graded on 3 exams, 1 paper, 1 group project, and 5 other activities. Studied 15+ hours for the final and still got a C on it. If you have a life, don't take a class with this professor.
Prof Rice is a fantastic teacher. The class was genuinely interesting and engaging. If you attend lecture, you shouldn't have to do much outside reading to get an A. If you skip you'll have to read to catch up because the slides on their own aren't enough without his commentary during lecture. Syllabus is intimidating at first but not too bad!
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. He is hilarious and an exceptional lecturer. He somehow made me look forward to attending a 5 p.m. class. The assigned book was the first one I've genuinely enjoyed reading in college. There is an online version so it's free.3 in-person tests. Test questions are basically handed to you.
I love Professor Rice! His diffusion of innovations class was really cool and his lectures were interesting. He is a really good professor and he is pretty funny too.
Professor Rice is a great teacher with a fun personality. You can really tell he loves what he teaches. I enjoyed the structure of the class too -- easy/manageable weekly assignments and 3 quizzes that are extremely easy to study for if you just follow his study guides. Definitely a great professor and a good class to take.
Great prof, class is structured around 3 quizzes n a paper, not bad at all. He has a good personality and it isn't super boring. I would recommend it.
By far my favorite Comm professor at UCSB. Caring, knowledgeable, respected. 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Rice is a really good teacher, but make sure to attend lecture and read the textbook. He provides stem questions at the end of each week which are very helpful in studying for the midterm and final. As for the two papers make sure to be very particular with the grading rubric, he is very very specific with formatting and content.
Professor Rice is an exceptional guy. He makes lecture engaging and interesting for his students. If you like dad jokes, you'll like him. His exams can be pulled from small details in the textbook or lecture and usually curves the class too. He's really passionate about his area of study and enjoys working with students.
Prof. Rice is a pretty cool guy. Good sense of humor. The class is relatively interesting and useful in real life. There are 3 short papers which are really easy and 2 50 question tests which are also not too bad. I never read the book once and got a B+. I would recommend for COMM majors.
Doesn't like students reading the newspaper so don't. Takes himself way too seriously...it's just comm. boring as allll hell
Ron has a great personality. I almost never missed class because I genuinely enjoyed it. His exams aren't too bad as long as you do the question stems. His powerpoints are kinda confusing but he does go over key reading points in class, so I almost never had to read. Id reccommend
Dudes a meme
He was a little bit behind on tech and went off on some cute little tangents in class, but overall solid class. not too hard.
Prof Rice is super great. Highly recommend you take his Comm 169 course. His exams follow his lectures closely, so if you take notes you can do really well on the exams. Also the reading is light and he goes over key points from reading during lecture. He's super funny and caring and just has a really good vibe. Take his class!
Rice is a very knowledgeable and funny guy. His Networks course was very heavy on the amount of material, but his STEM questions worked to guide the readings and gave a VERY good indicator of what would be on the tests. Though it may be daunting at times, the tests are straightforward and Rice makes class very enjoyable to attend. Take this course!
Professor Rice was great!! He throws a lot of dad jokes around during class that aren't too funny but if you get past the fact that they aren't funny and see him for his heart and effort, he is pretty funny actually. He really tries to get all his students involved and engaged and really appreciates class discussion. Overall, great professor <3
The readings are confusing and he's not great at explaining them in class. Attendance isn't mandatory and lecture slides are posted online. Although if you don't go to class the lecture notes are really confusing. The tests are also impossible. I barely passed this class and I put a decent amount of effort in. 0/10 would not recommend.
Rice is a really nice guy, and maybe this topic is just a dense one, but his social networking class was evil. He bases the entire curriculum on the dense readings and tests you on gritty details. All he does in class is go over the readings, making attendance and huge drag and seems unnecessary. I really like the guy as a person tho.
He is my favorite professor at UCSB. Extremely helpful, easy to follow, and clear on his expectations. Take his classes whenever you get a chance!
Rice is awesome. He truly cares about the students and the subject he teaches. This class was very interesting and you learn a lot! Highly recommended. Two papers, midterm, and final.
Seminar was on media ownership, really interesting and was a only two actual days in class. He's a really intelligent and amiable professor. I'm looking forward to taking more of his classes in UpperDiv.
really nice guy, knows a lot and has accomplished a lot but doenst have an ego, very helpful and clear, class is fun and interesting, recomend highly
Very nice teacher, kind, caring, does not have an ego eventhough he has accoplished a lot. I definitely reccomend taking any class he teaches. Very intersting and easy to learn.
