Terrible Lecturer. Doesn't help with the homeworks at all and doesn't explain the material well. Make sure you know Matlab for the homeworks because he will not go over the language.
Interesting class and material but professor is extremely abstract. Students literally do not know grade until after they complete 3 papers. Final is 50%. First C i've ever gotten in a Comm class at UCSB.
His attitude is so awful that it makes everything seem worse than it is. He gives off the impression that he doesn't care about lecturing at all - like it's this crappy job that he has to go to every day. His tests are almost entirely on his lecture notes, and the paper is pretty short, so the class is doable. Not fun, though.
Take him for CS 130A. Ignore the first project, he just uses it to weed people out of the course. It's pretty easy after that.
Not the best of professors in the Communication Department. A very critical man and not very approachable. Class material interesting, yet his style puts a damper on the overall rating of this class.
Very easy and interesting!! It is not necessary to read everything. The exam is easy and focus on lectures (not readings!)
The class is confusing. I got to the end of the quarter and had NO IDEA what my grade would be because final grade is based on the paper (45% of the grade and graded by the TA). I did well in the class and my advice is GO TO LECTURE - there is no way you can understand the class without. Also TAKE NOTES - you should do fine.
Interesting class, but not a lot of room to ask questions. The grading system sucks since basically your grade is your Research Paper and Final. I will never take a class with him again.
Professor Reid laid everything in his course out perfectly on sakai! Not only did he lay out all of the readings in pdf's on the website, but he was responsive and provided all we needed to succeed.
Clear lectures, provides powerpoint slides on handout. MUST GO TO LECTURE- there wasn't a reader or book, so you gotta go. No midterm, paper was a pain, but the final wasn't bad. Overall good class.
TO GET AN A: *START PROJECTS EARLY* 3 Proj=60% of grade. If you don't understand something, GO TO PROFESSOR/TA OFFICE HOURS. The are not that hard, they just take an ASSLOAD of time. Exams: memorize method signatures for each project (return types etc). If you did projects, exams are CAKE. START PROJECTS EARLY AND GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I got an A-
Lectures are clear and gives a handout of the slides at the beginning of class. Encourages discussion at the beginning of each topic. One paper and one final. NO MIDTERM which scared me but the test was very easy if you memorized terms, theories, their findings, and charts. Start paper research early. Overall fair grader and doesn't ask for too muc
He's really entertaining to listen to. He's funny and keeps you interested. The final was alright..but make sure you go to lecture because it's all based on lecture material
Final was harder than he makes it appear to be, make sure you know the charts and attend lecture. Grade based on assessment, research paper, and final.
There is no midterm... your grade is based on weekly one page responses, a 6-7 page paper and the final... unfortunately the paper and final are both at the very end so you have no idea what your grade will be. Fortunately the test is pretty easy... just be sure that you understand the studies that he goes over in class.
Most engaged professor I ever had, best feedback I have ever had on a paper. Pretty cute all dressed up for class--rugged little new zealander ;)

not at all entertaining. the paper is ridiculously enormous and there's no way of finding out what your grade in the class is until the end since there is no midterm. the topics can be interesting but he does a poor job of tying everything together so there is little cohesion. the class is basically a lit review of comm research.
the paper is a huge pain. you CANNOT procrastinate it until the last minute. the readings are tedious and pointless. his notes are confusing and his lectures arent very interesing. the only thing i liked is that hes kind of funny. wouldnt suggest the class unless you enjoy writing massive research papers
kind of boring. gives u the power point notes before lecture, so there isn't a lot of note taking. the paper is a huge **** and it's 50% of your grade, and the hw is busy work. basically, u don't know ur gade in the class at all until you finish the class cuz there's no midterm. very iffy about the prof.
