Get ready to write papers for this class since this class fulfills the writing criteria. But honestly, you would get at least a B if you wrote something. I enjoyed going to the lecture because Professor Casillas is an amazing lecturer. I did not do any of the reading, and I ended up with a B in the class. Easy GE class!
The professor was absolutely amazing! The worst part was that there was no midterm but, there were 4-5 writing assignments and one cumulative final. The TAs are basically in charge of grading and if you could avoid Pinheiro, you should. Her grades were miscalculated and she had unclear grading criteria. I didn't do any readings but passed with a B!
Funny lecturer that tries to stay "hip!" No midterm, multiple choice + essay for the final. 3 different writing assignments throughout the quarter with somewhat clear rubrics, though I feel that the TAs are pretty subjective. No iClicker and lecture attendance is not mandatory, though it definitely helped with the final.
So enthusiastic and fun! Makes the class very interesting and easy to keep up with.
She made this class so much more difficult than it needed to be. She posts all of her lecture slides online, but typically still just reads straight from the slides and theres no iclicker making it easy not to come to class. There is not clear criteria for grading, and it is all up to if the TA likes you. The final is ridiculous and way too hard.
This class made me want to become a Chicano Studies major. I can agree it was unorganized but she is really passionate. She is funny and charismatic. She made us read 4 books, two she wrote and two autobiographies. I thought her books were amazing, the autobiographies less so. Regardless, very easy class to get an A. Really no effort is involved.
She is extremely unorganized and makes you buy two of her own books which are not very interesting. The other two books are pretty good though. The class is a pretty easy A as long as you get the main concepts, use Guachospace study guide, and pay attention to the movies. Also, she is a very sweet person.
Very unorganized class, she barely taught and relied heavily on guest lectures and movies. Easy A but it isn't a class you will look forward to attending.
Most unorganized class have ever taken at UCSB. Didn't really learn anything in the class, a lot of guest lectures. Easy A--I didn't read anything and still got an A
Concepts are repetitive, but somewhat interesting. I feel like we had more guest lecturers than actual lectures taught by her. 4 books - you mainly just have to know the vocab words, the two biographies, and the story of her brother. Midterm, final, and a final paper. Exams were easy, not a difficult class overall. The TAs are wonderful.
Lecture is mandatory (she does a word of the day) but pointless because she goes off on tangents and isn't well organized. Class was about Gender and Sexuality but felt like more of a Psych/Soc class where she talked a lot about her brother. 4 books total, used all of them. Midterm and final were both nothing too difficult.
Prof. Casillas is one of the best professors I have had at UCSB. She is funny, and makes the topics she discusses interesting. The readings are not that bad, and she is very approachable!
Multiple choice test and a analytical paper. Don't go on your phone. She is knowledgable about her stuff but if you have a question you should ask because she has a lot to go through. You should study and read (reader) in order to do well. my ta Mercedes O. was awesome and led me to the ed minor
If you take Chicano Studies, take it with Casillas. Her lectures may be entirely based off her assigned readings, but she only mentions the most important parts for the class. You do not need to know anything else about the readings. Go to section, turn in your phone for 4 Extra Credit Points, and you should get an A. She is a great person!
Amazing professor, fair grader, overall excellent experience
Dolores is an amazing professor! Took her for my Senior Seminar, lectures were super interesting and discussions were both enlightening and stimulating. The readings were long but very relevant to the course. Highly recommend taking a class with her!
Content was great, lecture is not mandatory but it is very helpful to go because she pretty much sets you up for the final. Readings also important to read as they do help with understanding the concepts. Smart and beautiful lady too.
LOVE HER. Amazing content (I'm an LC&S major), and she's a fantastic lecturer. She's very funny, genuine, and intelligent without being condescending or over-demanding. She's always up for talking to students outside of class about various things, and she's enlightened me about a lot of topics in the realm of language politics. Take this class!!
Pretty demanding class, as with most ethnicity classes. Lots of reading and a variety of assignments. But prof Casillas is a fantastic lecturer! Loved her personal anecdotes. She knows what she is talking about and who she is talking to. Very competitive to be a TA so they are good as well. Taking this class was a very positive experience!
Amazing class. Not a CH ST major or even Latino/a but I felt like I learned so much about Chicano culture that I have retained & carried with me. Prof. Casillas is a fantastic speaker & so passionate about the subject. Explains concepts clearly & helps you succeed. I read the 300+ pg reader cover to cover & I havent ever done that for my major.
She is a good speaker. I took the 3 week summer course only had to do a midterm, a critical analysis, and a final. Also gave extra credit by turning in your phone during lecture. She's really down to earth, funny, easy to understand, and does care about her students. She uses powerpoint in her lectures and posts them on Gauchospace.
Professor Casillas is a great professor who really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Class was interesting and she taught it well. Put the work in and you will do well. Definitely recommend this course.
This was my first upper div, and I really enjoyed her class! She is funny and down to earth, and the subjects we cover are interesting. I got a lot out of the class. The more you go to lecture, the more you learn, and section is straight forward. Pretty easy too. The readings were good and she was a clear speaker. Definitely recommend this class!
