Intensive research or study by a small group of advanced students who share an interest in a topic not included in the regular departmental curriculum.
The course was challenging, but Menso explained the context pretty well. He was able to provide lots of useful information about earth science careers. Would also recommend his EARTH194GC.

very boring GE and lectures, would not recommend if not needed.

He is a very fair professor in the sense that he looks out for his students. If he writes a tough question he will own up to it and give students credit. Very interesting material and he is just overall a very nice guy. Slightly easy to zone out during lectures, but he posts them on gs so you can always catch up.

Menso is awesome. Such a sweet guy that cares about his students and the material. Understands that its a GE and doesn't want to make students suffer. Class graded by weekly HW quizzes on gauchospace (open note), easy labs in section, and a midterm and a final. This is a solid class that doesn't make you want to die!

Don't let his low-ish rating scare you from taking his class. Earth 4 was a really easy class as long as you pay attention in lecture (albeit he was not the most lively lecturer) and/or look at the lecture slides he posts online. Exams were all MC. Gave a vocab sheet for both midterm and final, which made them really easy to study for.

De Jong was an okay professor, which is fine especially since he's very new, but I felt the harder concepts in the class weren't explained very well, and while the midterm was easy, I felt the final was a lot more difficult and asked about very small details and not over-arching concepts like the mid. Easy B, I wouldn't say the class is an easy A.
