What do you think when you think of “Pakistan?” What feelings does it engender? What visions does it (re)create? What about “Pakistan” and “cinema?” This course examines the idea of a national culture and the cinema of Pakistan in terms of major periods, themes, formal parameters, and institutions in relation to both national and international cultural histories. In choosing Pakistan and its cinema history which correlates with a complex political history of constantly changing regimes as our locale, we will both problematize and work through the concept of a national cinema culture through a burgeoning subfield of film studies, Pakistani cinema.

Prerequisites: Film studies 46 or upper-division standing, and consent of instructor.
