Introduction to the modern era of Western art history, focusing on European and American histories. It begins reviewing the 18th-century European Enlightenment: scientific inquiry and new forms of representation are the models for the course. Proceeding through the 19th-century histories of colonization and land grabs, and then move to the 20th-century, focusing on the rise of urbanism, migration, and new developments in abstract art; additional focus on ethnicity, race, sexuality and gender across the Arts & Crafts Movement, and the rise of internationalism and global art histories in the 21st-century, ending the course by examining the present time period.

Pretty easy class. Have to participate in section, do a few writing assignments, and you're good.

Professor Sorkin is a good professor. The class material was very interesting and we covered many artists in the course, especially women and people of color. I appreciated how helpful section was and the midterm and final were adequate, not too crazy. She is not the friendliest professor, but she was available for office hours.

sorkin's attitude and teaching style make online classes with her a tire. can't imagine taking a class in person with her.

She hardly smiles. Too efficient to the point where she talks accusingly and has no patience. She gets a lot of things wrong in class and its hard to learn well. Little respect will be shown to you if you take her class

Professor Sorkin is very biased in her presentation of the course material, and while she tries to be "woke" she is not sensitive to delicate material and never puts content warnings when discussing these subjects. The majority of the course was non-objective, based on her personal opinions, and she was not interested in any other points of view.
