The intersection between leisure and politics is a consistent feature of African history, and it is a complex, creative intersection that produces and transacts history in dynamic ways. Utilizing ancient transcripts and records of performative cultures, contemporary music, primary and secondary interpretations of African cultural life, this course provides a deep and timely exploration of the fertile intersection between cultural performativity and power from ancient times to the present. Performative cultures are therefore political, and so also are they spiritual, economic and deeply embedded in questions of science and technology.

Prerequisites: A previous course in History or upper division standing.

HIST148PL . 5 Years Ago

Prof. Chikowero was a tough grader. He would never specify what he wanted in our papers and would send out assignments very late notice. He is very unorganized and would change our due dates. He also doesn't use GauchoSpace so you spend the whole quarter guessing what your grade is. I highly don't recommend unless you want to be stressed out.

Tbh, very inconsiderate professor. Sends homework assignments very last minute and expects you to check your emails throughout the weekend. Cancelled class for a full week right before our research papers were due & wasnt even accesible through email due to limited internet access. Also a tough grader. Not worth taking his class.

Stay away at all costs. Just like the last review said, this class was extremely disorganized with no clear grading criteria. You will need to read 20-50 pages a week, as expected of a GE. Prof. was very inaccessible online, however, and no-showed office hours he said were required. If doing for a GE, stay away from this Prof. TAs are good though.

BL49A . A Month Ago

DON'T waste your time on this professor. We were supposed to meet for 3 hrs on Mondays, but he canceled 7/10 times. When class did happen, it was only an hour. He even had the nerve to give an impromptu quiz after a month of canceled classes. The syllabus was one paragraph w/ no grading scale, & assignments seem thrown together. Unorganized class.

Super nice teacher, take advantage of office hours! Try to at least skim the reading, because there are a LOT, but worth taking!

BLST49A . 2 Years Ago

BLST 49A with Professor Chikowero was an eye-opener of a class. A few lengthy readings due before each lecture, weekly assignments and the occasional quiz, an 8 page research paper, and the final of course. Very informative and humorous in lecture, grades fairly, and encourages questions. Lots of writing required, but amazing learning experience!
