What distinguishes a country 'at peace' from one experiencing war? How do we define types of violence, ranging from the interpersonal level to civil conflict, interstate war, and mass atrocities? This course examines theories and empirical studies of conflict and violence from the local to the global, drawing on approaches from across the social sciences. We work to understand individual and collective behavior in conflict and violent environments and how the social, political, and economic factors motivating or facilitating conflict might be altered or addressed to help build more sustainable peace. The course is highly participatory with a mixed structure: one interactive lecture and one session of small group discussions each week.

One of my favorite classes at UCSB! Professor Thaler is amazing and gives great feedback on assignments. He grades based on weekly reading responses, an op ed, a final research paper, and participation in small group discussions. The content of this class is very interesting and relevant. This class is also very low stress, I highly recommended it.
Professor Thaler gave super engaging, straightforward lectures. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about the course material which created the opportunity for great class and group discussions. Grades were limited to a few assignments, but he graded generously and gave helpful feedback.
Professor Thaler is a real gem. He has been so kind and understanding of his students throughout the pandemic. Plus his lectures and readings were really fantastic and taught me a lot. 10/10 would recommend!
TAKE HIS CLASS!! i had prof thaler for global 120 & 124 and he's AMAZING!! super understanding about personal situations and easy for you to reach if you ever have a question about content or the course itself outside of class. class mainly based off 1 MCQ midterm, a paper, and a super fun, open-ended final project. interesting course material
Prof Thaler is a great guy. Very clear on what he expects, but it's not too much. His lectures are great and easy to understand. Attendance isn't mandatory at lecture, but it is at section.
Thaler gives awesome lectures. Clear, consistent, understandable, and often keeps them to just an hour long. Only a few main assignments to be graded on which we were well prepared for.
