The professor is great...however your grade is determined by your TA. If you get an easy TA then you're set, if not then you're screwed. Quizzes are a piece of cake, but the essays will kill you. Professor Rose though is AWESOME. Fantastic lecturer, all around great guy, really knows his Shakespeare!
Good class for majors/non majors. Read the plays and you will be fine. He is enthusiastic, and yes, very giddy but it will make you chuckle. It makes you want to read and do well because what he has to say is true and intriguing.
Annie Abrams was a great TA for this class! And Prof Rose rocked!
Check your brain at the door with this guy. Egoism personified. Does not give A's -one of the old school who thinks nobody could possibly be as bright as him, which is obviously not very bright. Really disappointing. Never thought I could dread a Shakespeare class. Avoid if possible.
Prof Rose was pretty good. He gets really into his lectures and it can be really funny sometimes. If you read the plays, the quizzes aren't really a problem. No midterm, two papers (which were fine) and a final. Not a work-intensive class. He's a nice guy and he wants to help you out.
I really liked professor Rose. His enthusiasm for the class made the material really interesting. I didn't have much experience OR interest with Shakespeare...but i ended up liking the class. We had quizzes after every play (5 plays), no midterm, 2 papers, and a final. The first couple quizzes scared me cause they were hard, but theygot easier.
Super enthusiastic professor...lectures sometimes seemed irrelevant...still, overall good class
has a PhD from Harvard, but is surprising a very kind and clear professor. as an english major, i have seen my share of dept. teachers, but rose really takes the cake. cheers!
Great professor who loves to teach. Really interesting lecures that make you feel like you are actually learning. The class is easy too. Paper topics are unique and manageable. I love how he plays songs before each lecture. I highly recommend this class with this professor
Professor Rose was my favorite instructor at UCSB. I re-arranged my entire schedule to make sure I had him for my senior seminar. He listens carefully to anything you have to say and acts as though it is the first time he has every heard that take on Hamle

He is the best teacher there!
Great prof. He really knows his stuff (much better than some of the teachers who teach more advanced Shakespeare courses). I respect any academic who believes that Hamlet is supposed to be in his 30s and not his early 20s!
EASY CLASS!! GREAT ONE ON SHAKESPEARE.
This guy is awesome! his bowties and songs before class rock, and it is a pretty fair class, no midterm and a multiple choice final!
Good lectures, clear Powerpoint slides. Good, fair tests and quizzes. Paper topics aren't very difficult. Highly suggest this class for anyone who enjoys or has a handle on Shakespeare. May be tough for those who don't like or understand though.
