HORRIBLE class. Seemingly easy at first (and only 2 units), but not when it comes to exams.Concepts in class are very easy, but this does not translate into the test questions he comes up with. Know every concept backwards and forwards, although this is difficult to do when you have ochem, physics, and mcdb at the same time, hah.
horrible class. working on the study questions did not help at all. his questions on the final were completely different than the study questions. makes things very confusing
STRAIGHT UP AWFUL. You spend the entire class going over a really simple concept that you could have learned yourself in ten minutes. You go to the final thinking it would be the easy stuff but he turns it into weird complex terrible passages that you have to scour answers from. The study questions were NOT representative.
This guy is so bad. makes simple things confusing.
The class was absolutely horrible. It almost seemed like he made the stuff up from the slides. He CONSTANTLY over complicates things and claimed that his practice questions were going to be like the final, which they were not. This was one of the most useless classes that I have taken at UCSB and I would avoid it if possible.
The final was ridiculous compared to the easy 300+ practice questions he gave us. Lecture was overcomplicated and once I went to CLAS I realized how simple the material really was. Not a bad lecturer...just makes the test really hard... :(
I worked so hard to only get a C. Dr. Rice was extremely hard to follow, and he gave everything too fast. His final was ridiculous and was NOTHING like the practice questions. He lied and said if we did them all we would do well, well I did all 200+ and did not do so well.
good teacher but the final was very different than the easy "practice" questions online. i was not too happy about that but oh well
he was alright. at least he wasn't so boring that you fell asleep in class. he could be confusing sometimes. he was ok, not good, not bad. he test slightly questions were kinda hard
Pretty clear, gives plenty of stuff to prepare you for exam. Alot of people did poorly on it for some reason, I suppose its because those people are bad at doing simple math in their head. That's not Dr. Rice's fault, he was a very good professor.
Lectures are boring, but he's quite clear on what you need to know for the test. i do recommend attending lectures, otherwise the notes tend to not make sense. The test isn't too difficult if you do the practice problems he posts for you. the test did have somewhat vague questions though. never used the book. a decent class, just not my favorite.
I have no idea why people don't like this guy. I thought he was a great professor. He's perfectly clear about everyhting he wants you to know and tries to make the material as interesting as possible. One thing he does is overcomplicate simple concepts, but if you go to his office hours just once he'll make you understand everything.
He wasnt bad at all, if you dont mind a little math mixed with your bio. I got an A, Study and you'll do fine, and its pretty funny watching his built up anger towards his ex wife.
his test was surprsingly hard compared to dr.even's 1st part eemb2 midterm. don't worry tho, curve will do its job---personally, he was pretty good teacher.
jesus... this guy sucks. He just royally sucks at everything- no wonder his wife divorced him.
He tought the evolution part and was soooo boring! His midterm is ridiculously hard for no reason! He makes obvious things confusing and interrupts during the test MANY times for useless corrections! Try very hard not to take his classes.

He sucks as a professor and read right off his powerpoint slides. I fell asleep in his class. Memorize his old exam questions=same as final. His final is really hard compared to the first midterm.
