one of the most interesting classes i have taken, but one of the best parts was the professor, he was just "authentic," I got a C+, but i am a moron, took a 19 unit load, take home midterm and final
I took both 160 A and B and absolutely loved both of them. Harris is a very sweet old man but he definitely knows all there is to know about southern history! The take home midterm and final are easy as long as you take good notes in class (which i really recommend not missing). He's always there to help and will answer anything you ask! Loved him!
I took HIST160DR with Harris because it was the only one that fit into my schedule since I was graduating. I'll give him that he's very knowledgeable, but also a little disorganized and dry. The readings were dry and repetitive. I did little to none of the reading, but still pulled out a B+.
I don't know why anyone would put less than a 5 on easiness level for this class. If you take good notes take this class because on both the TAKE HOME midterm and final all I did was copy my notes into an essay and got an A- in the class. Make sure you go to class every day, I also didn't do any of the reading since it was all summarized in class
After a few weeks I couldn't stand Harris. He's a great guy but he always repeats everything!! His grading isn't fare at all. I used a different argument about a subject and he marked me half off saying I didn't use his ideas. Also, we didn't get our midterms back until the last week of classes! No one knew their grade!
Like any proseminar its your own work but prof does not waste any time in the proseminar usually you go for an hour sometimes even less. He is always there for office hour you can see every week and very understanding about being late or needing advice, just dont plagerize he is like a walking encyclopedia about Southern literature.
Good class lecutres on some very interesting topics. Gives helpful comments when grading papers.
Great teacher, good knowledge on the South, only a midterm and final which is take home and short, classes are lecture style and does not promote much discussion though, sometimes monotone, easy class, easy professor overall will take again.
Great Im a History major and he is my fav
This man is seriously one of the BEST Professors I've ever had. He's the nicest man and his classes are interesting and easy!! He's also a very good grader. I'm still surprised by how much I learned from his class.
I only took this class to fulfill a GE requirement in Summer Sessions, but I found myself absoutely enthralled by it. I can't say if it was just the material or what, but I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the class. Very good presenations and fair grading. Good readings too.
I appreciated how he helped me get through my obscure topic with suggestions and books. Our discussion sections in History 197CH were very enlightening and I wouldn't recommend anyone else for Southern history.
I've taken about four classes with this guy...he's a good prof. if you really like history. He teaches history like a story instead of just ramdom events and people...
I had Carl Harris over 20 years ago, and he was fantastic. I'm now a professor, and he really inspired me. You can't find anyone better to teach Southern history.
I took 3 classes with Prof. Harris. I think he is a good lecturer. He present history from multiple perspectives, and lets you decided which one is correct. A great professor for people who like history.
This was a discussion he had that was one day a week for at the most 2 hours. Only requirement was to show up and the grade was based on one 8-10 page paper. Very interesting class and easy to get an A
I took 160 A-B and the prosem while I was at UCSB. Difficult classes but I LOVED them. He is a great teacher and I learned so much. Take his courses!
Great teacher. Makes history into a detailed anecdote, very interesting. Very open-minded too. If you don't like history, you will probably not like this teacher.
He is boring, but very knowlegable and nice. If you enjoy history he is GREAT, but if you take it for a GE get another professor.
too verbose, makes subject not so interesting. not hard, but not real fun.
