Great Teacher, Best Physics Teacher I've had yet. Clear as can be, no BS. Just what you need as an early physics major. Midterm and final were fair. Homework was weekly and challenging but I was glad, because it was great prep for the exams.
Very clear. Best physics teacher I've had at UCSB.
Andrew Cleland is a great teacher. He is incredibly knowledgable and his lectures are interesting. He communicates well with the class and is extremely organized. I'd definitely recommend taking a class with him.
In my opinion, he is one of the greatest teachers at UCSB. He gives very professional lectures with helpful notes to summarize the reading (so helpful, you may never pick up the textbook). He is extremely quick and clear answering questions and makes sure to impart a very deep conceptual understanding, alongside rigorous mathematical formalism.
I don't know what the person below me is talking about (and what class don't you do homework in to learn??). The lecture notes he provides are great. It allows you to focus more on the material than on note taking and is clear to read later on. Cleland is super clear and a great lecturer. The class is not that hard as long as you keep up with hw.
I don't think I learned anything in his lectures. It's not that he didn't know his stuff or that he was a just bad, but it was nearly impossible for me to pay attention. You can buy lecture notes from the bookstore. Don't. Just take notes like you normally would or you won't have any motivation to actually learn. Do the homework or you WON'T learn.
This man is a genius.....explains concepts with crystal clarity and shows no reluctance in answering any questions a student might have. Plan on spending alot of time doing homework. Midterm averages are around a 50% so don't expect to get perfect scores...he curves the average to a B.
Decent professor, good to go to in office hours. A few lecture slides had mistakes on them for the iClicker questions. The material was easy enough that if you have any physics background, you should be fine
Great guy. Not the most interesting lectures ever but it was basic material. Class was curved well and your final could save you if you didn't do well. I would take a class with him again. Definitely one of the better professors I've had.
he's amazing!!! I miss him so much! great physics teacher, great demonstrations, and just a nice dude.
Great lecturer, but the exams and homework were really tough. Huge ass curve by the way: 45% = C!
He knows his stuff really well, but sometimes he lectures too quickly and makes it difficult to follow. His tests aren't too bad if you study, just make sure to do LOTS of problems out of the textbook (which otherwise isn't helpful) which should help a lot on top of his generous B- curve. Bombed the second midterm and still got an A- in the class
He is awesome, cool demos, great lectures. I got a A- in the class and only read 1 page in the book. The homeworks are kind of hard, and I would recommended to do every single problems even if they are not graded. The final was pretty hard, but he gives generous curve with class average at B-.
He's a good lecturer, but one-on-one he was pretty difficult to understand. The first midterm was alright, the second midterm and final are murder. Although he curves the class pretty well that anyone who tries all the tests and does most of the HW (along w/ the other graded stuff) should be able to pass the class.
great teacher, started off with an easy first midterm to a slightly harder 2nd one, then killing everyone with a monster final. Thought i was gonna get an A for sure and ended up getting a B. Hw was hard and required time if you did it on your own, but helps with the material. as far as physics teachers go, hes recommended.
Highly recommended! Awesome teacher! Knows his material and is completely approachable and friendly and helpful. Classes are relatively interesting and have cool demos. Material isn't too bad and u don't NEED to read the book. 1st midterm was super easy, 2nd was pretty tough, final was brutal. Hw was a little rough but u adjust, and learn A LOT.
Cleland sometimes thinks he is a little kid with his crazy experiments, and was a funny guy. Hes a great lecturer, really down to eath as well as a very renowned professor...Its physics though so expect his test to be hard and tricky. The homework takes forever and is harder then his test tho.
very clear, very organized. does not mind taking the time to answer questions during lecture. i would take his class over almost any other physics teacher here.
Good teacher!
Best science lecturer here, hands down.
Best Lecturer ever!!! Midterms are really easy!! Finals and Homework are another story.
The man's a legend. Simply put, a hero.
Cleland is ****in awesome. Ask him any question and he will explain it to you with absolute clarity. He could explain F=ma as if he was learning it with you. You would have no idea he has books out about nanotechnology. He never speaks down to you which is the case with too many professors.
Prof. Cleland was willing to explain things as many times as were necessary until all our questions were satisfied. The exams were easier this quarter. The phys 24 final was the hardest I've ever taken.
