A lot of reading and you have to buy a very expensive reader. The material can get very bland if you're not interested in Russian avantgarde. However, I did learn a lot. There were weekly quizzes based on questions that he sends out for you to do. You have to do 4 short essays for your final which were pretty manageable.
Professor Spieker assigns homework on GauchoSpace that he collects at random. You have to give a presentation that the syllabus says is part of the grade but actually isn't graded at all. There were two weird quizzes. The two exams are take-home essays, which is good. Class moves in a frustratingly erratic fashion and there's no way to plan ahead.
Not too organized, and the class has tons of reading. Really interesting subject matter though, he gets really into it
Really chill professor. Lectures are long but he is very passionate about the topic which makes it more interesting. Probably the easiest grader I've seen at UC. Definitely a good way to get an art credit.
Seems like you either like this guy or hate him. Found his lectures very interesting and his quizzes weren't too hard, just had to read the assigned texts an hour before class. Course was on conceptual art so be ready for discussions you will either see as mind-blowing or overly analytical depending on your perspective.
I found this class very hard. The subject matter is quite...eccentric. We had the class in a 2.5 hr block and it's hard to sit through. There's no textbook, a very fat reader with difficult articles and no partial credit. Quizes tended to be harder than the exams and weighed more (combined) that the final. Think twice before signing up.
The material can be challenging, but he's very good at walking you through it and highlighting the important points. The grading is pretty easy to compensate and he's flexible and is willing to help students. One of my favorites.
Honestly, this is a difficult class but the grading is easy. He basically wants you to read and understand the material (which he talks you through). Its a surprisingly amazing class though once you get into it. Putting in the effort is key; very worth it! Interesting.
Sven is a great teacher, friendly and approachable. Lectures are interesting and based on discussion, so come prepared with the readings done. He likes people who speak up and have insightful comments that they are prepared to back up.
Really difficult, challenging class, but he made me want to try because he's SO hot. not hard to understand; expects a lot from papers and quizzes; very theoretical, conceptual lectures. i came away satisfied.
Like someone mentioned before, his lectures are mostly concept, but his quizes and tests are very specific and detailed. Has homework assignments AND journals due online twice a week, and for some reason that's annoying. Plays favorites FOR SURE (If I hear the name "Sasha" ONE MORE TIME...!) He's fun to look at, however ;)
interesting
This is a really really tough class. This professor is unbeliavably smart and thinks way too deep for the average person. He def. plays favorites a lot and if he likes you its great, but if he doesn't know you or doesn't like you thats very bad. His tests are very tricky and a lot of writing. Lot of reading and memorization, hard paper grader too
he's not an art historian, he knows nothing about architecture, yet somehow the department has approved him to teach this class. just seems like he comes up with his "theories" during his lectures...oh and he NEVER finishes on time, always goes over!... what I like about him most is his cute accent and HOT butt lol.
Worst teacher ever. Completely unprepared for classes. Unorganized. Looks like he types up the slides right before he comes to class. Unprofessional, lots of typos. Unclear in what he wants. Likes to hear himself talk. Concentrates on concepts, but tests on veryspecific information. Doesn't seem like he knows about the subject.
This guy confuses the hell out of me, but I don't think that's his goal. He just tends to jump from theory to theory. I get left int he dust.
Extremely difficult class taught in Russian. Challenging even if you already speak the language. Readings were too long, but he adapted to the needs and abilities of the students after a few weeks. Very insightful lecturer.
hard to keep track of all his theories for things. graded rather hard on quizes and papers. challenging class but interesting subject matter.
Our midterm was supposed to be a simple in-class passage identification, but he changed it to a difficult take-home on account of going to Europe for a week. Thanks a lot, Sven! Whatever, you're still hot. Interesting disc., doesn't make you feel stupid.
Good Lecturer. Interesting books and topics. Hard to figure out what he's looking for in papers.
