She gives out pop quizzes, but is an easy grader for both quizzes and essays. Great at generating discussion about the readings, but is overall mediocre. The material we covered was really interesting though, so I didn't mind her somewhat boring lectures. She passes around a sign-in sheet on random days, so be sure to attend or make a friend.
She's super caring and understanding. Interesting lectures because she is passionate about what she teaches. Put an effort in learning names. :)
Lectures were mainly just about the assigned readings, so as long as you read, youll be okay. There are many pop quizzes on the readings, and most of them were pretty easy. Her lectures were boring though and I got distracted by her saying uhh very frequently. Its an okay class. She requires a lot of participation in class.
this class was really hard. I felt there were not enough opportunities to get help except for emails (sometimes ignored questions in the email) compared to other classes I would say this one ranked pretty low because the things discussed in class vs what you are supposed to study are completely different a lot of the time...
Literally the worst class I ever took. The lectures were boring, unengaging, and kind of annoying because she says uhhhh at the her own confusing thoughts. I tried so hard to listen to her and understand but she just did not make any sense b/c her accent was so off and she kept saying uhh. She's sweet but not a good instructor.
This was a really BORING class unless you enjoy reading ancient texts. Lecture is sort of mandatory… she would randomly pass out slips of paper to check attendance but no clicker. One midterm , two 900word papers and a final. Papers weren't too bad but my TA didn't give out A's easily. Counts for a lot of GE requirements
I expected this course to delve into comp lit, and not the historical facts that Brown usually lectured about. She's a very sweet lady but it's easy to not pay attention. Midterm/final is easy, but overall not the best professor for a lit class.
Brown is great. She takes attendance at random lectures, so it's best to go to all of them. The tests are easy if you've been reading and paying attention in lecture. The TAs are great, and they really helped me understand a lot of the material. This class was very straightforward, and she stuck to the syllabus. I would recommend this class :)
Such a sweet lady. Lectures are very clear and tests are very straightforward if you attend class.Takes attendance at lectures randomly. Learned a lot for a GE class. Great sense of humor, and very intelligent! Would love to have her again!
Disregard all you've seen - Prof. Brown is amazing! The material is so interesting and she gives cultural/background information so we understand the period and makes it relatable to us. She likes people to attend and speak up in class, and she is very approachable. Minimal writing, just two papers and a midterm/final. I would so take her again!
This class was extremely boring and taught me close to nothing about the French language. Her corrections on the essays were inconsistent and often unclear. We were required to read deep into the meaning of the poems and stories far beyond what was discussed in class. If you want to sit in a class and listen to her say "uhhhhhhh" then go ahead.
Guides class well, discusses assigned materials, encouraging, easy to approach, expects you to work.
This class was okay. I didn't go to lecture or section that often, but I still got an A-. It's not too bad if you've taken AP English or you can write decently. She's pretty boring but the test questions are all basically from lecture. It's a pretty easy class if you're interested in the material. Read the stuff and lecture is much less boring.
I really liked the material in this class. The lectures were sometimes boring, but i found most of her comments interesting and useful.
I loved this class. The material we covered was mostly interesting. Lecture wasn't incredibly exciting, but it wasn't too boring either. As long as you do all the reading (which usually isn't much per night) and take notes in lecture, you'll be fine. I found section with Cain to be pointless, though. Unfortunately, attendance is mandatory.
dont take this class. the prof is SOOOO boring, i couldnt stand attending class. everytime she said something, i was like NO DUH... everyone knows that from reading the text. i get no insight...no challenges from her. i hated this clas so much.
Professor Brown was my favorite professor last quarter. She assigned interesting readings, and I actually looked forward to hearing her go over them in class. Her quizzes were more than fair, and so were her essay topics. The class is designed so that if you do the reading and come to class you will be just fine. I would give Professor Brown an A+
i am shocked to see negative reviews for professor brown. the review posted before mine (hopefully it doesnt get deleted) sums it up in a nutshell. she was wonderful.
I'm not sure why expecting students to come to class makes her a horrible professor. I thought she was beautiful and eloquent and thoughtful. I loved the subject matter and her interpretations and she knew all of our lecture's names by the second week. She's brilliant and one of my favorite professors at UCSB.
God Aweful!!!! If you are a person who does not like speaking in class do not take this! she calls on you like crazy and expects a ton of participation, She takes attendence in lecture by making you fill out notecards. You must attend the firt lecture or she will boot you from the class. Horrible!
Her classes were pointless, her comments made no sense, and it was a waste of my time
what a ridiculous class! She knows exactly what she wants on your papers. She says to be creative, yet when you are she writes " NO... actually this means..." Pointless class. Dont waste your time.oh yeah, braswell is not much better.
Half the time it doesn't seem like she knows what she's talking about. Her in-class analysis of the texts was surface level, but then for the essays students were expected to come up with something deeper. Unfair grading, very disorganized class.
She has this high and mighty, snobbish attitude towards everyone. She looks down on the students, and even when I went to office hours, she was really snobby. Harsh grading on papers and class structure not very good either
