Slides are so vague, it's impossible to figure out what she means. Lectures don't help much either. Test questions are so complicated, I studied for hours but still got a C each time. Luckily some questions are directly copy-pasted from the quizzes and the writing assignments are easy so it is possible to pass.
Honestly I dont know why people are so harsh on her. She does read off her powerpoint slides so if you do like that then take her. Tests are easy if you just study the powerpoint and skim the readings (which she highlights what to read). Averages on exams are B range. Homework is easy (just use notes). Show up to class bc participation matters
Mackie is a nice lady but her class was the epitome of boring. She reads off of the slides and takes forever to explain basic concepts. Dont want to go to class because its a waste of time? Well, she takes attendance points to reward those who can sit through her painstakingly slow lectures. Class isn't hard, but you could do the work quicker alone
She reads right off the slides. When she tries to explain the slides, sometimes it's confusing. The slides seem straightforward but the exams require more in-depth understanding and critical thinking compared to her slides and lecture. No book, but article readings are HIGHLY suggested to read for the exams.
Saw her for Biopsych advising. She was extremely rude and unprofessional. I haven't seen her already but she kept on insisting that she had answered my question before even though we've never met. She wouldn't even talk :(
This class is an honors class you you must be selected. Overall I enjoyed it and professor mackie's teaching. She does get on you about your writing but if you listen to her corrections you are sure to succeed. She is a nice lady and tries to make class fun by letting us help make the curriculum and by bringing in food.
Mackie is a sweet lady but her class was difficult. The lecture and material was interesting however for the test you need to unterstand the concept and be able to apply it to a different situation. The tests are tricky cause she will put options that are correct but have no relevance to the question being asked, so you must know your stuff.
A very interesting class and lectures were always engaging. Her test were VERY tough, tricky. Not only do you need to read the readings but you need to know the concepts inside out. Memorize notes and KNOW the readings. Aced the final thanks to office hours and studying my butt off! It can be done, attend lectures & office hours & you will do well.
Hated this class. Her tests are very difficult. She formulates her lectures around studies and rushes through them. She is not an easy teacher. Expects you to know ALL readings. Test answers hav choices that can be correct, but not the right answer. She drops your worst test. Try not to take her if you don't have time to devote that quarter
Psy141 I agree with the prev. comments. Diana Mackie is great out of class, and she knows her stuff BUT, unfortunately this does not translate to her being a good teacher. She's really not very engaging, and doesn't explain concepts the way students need to have them explained. Her tests are very difficult, and it's a wonder that anybody got an A.
This class had the potential to be interesting and useful, however Mackie made it clinical and dry. She runs through lecture like a firing squad. When you ask questions she answers very condescendingly. She may be great outside of class, but I would NEVER take a class with her again. Attended every lecture/studied very hard and Still got a B-
Confusing teacher with ridiculously tricky tests. I'm an A student and received a C on my 1st midterm. Worked harder to pull off a B in this class than I work to get A's in other classes. Material is interesting but she complicates things and makes it difficult to want to learn. I'd only recommend this if you're really interested in the material.
Mackie is a clear and knowledgeable teacher. She uses a lot of direct examples of the effects she teaches about. She is structured and also posts almost all of her slides online which makes for a great study guide/overview so you don't get lost. The material seems easy; her tests are very tricky though, don't underestimate them!
Awesome class. Professor was very, very helpful and worked with us on everything. Would definitely take another class with her
this class was miserable. i thought the material was interesting but the way she explained it was so confusing. even the simplest of studies were explained terribly. she spends about 10 seconds on each slide- way too fast. im usually a good student and this is the first class im worried about not passing..definitely do not recommend!
Material is interesting but when I looked up a study we discussed in class, I realized that she generalized the material to fit the results she wanted to present. Tests are very tricky, I am an A/B student and I got a C- because I could not master her exams. If you are good at multiple choice exams, you might do ok.
Material is easy to understand, but tests are extremely difficult. Tests are multiple choice, but she likes to try to trick you with the answers, so be sure to read the question carefully to know what she's asking for. There are two midterms and a final, but she drops your lowest test score, so you don't have to take the final if you don't want to.
Material is incredibly easy to understand (if you ignore the fact that the experiments she teaches all have severe design flaws she can't explain) but class is punished for learning by the worst curve down I've ever experienced. If there are other psych classes available to you DO NOT take this one. Your attendance and effort will not be rewarded.
Brilliant woman who wants you to do well. Tests excruciating. I received a C in her class and two A's in others doing much less work. She expects excellence. Teaching style very distracting showing slides and lecturing while you take notes at laptop speed. Enthusiastic! Class is worth it in terms of content. Fascinating material.
The Social Influence class is a difficult one because it seems really easy in class but the tests are hard. It seems like you don't really need to study so its hard to get motivated but work hard and you should be ok. Mackie is really nice and helpful and let me miss the final. She is just more interested in the topic than I was!
You think the class is all easy and everything, but don't be deceived because it's not as easy as it seems. I wasn't really a huge fan of the actual lecture either. Be prepared to hear about a LOT of experiments.
Smart woman, and she cares about her students. One of the best at UCSB -- and one of only two professors in the psychology department who's won the college's distinguished professor of the year award.
She was the rudest teacher I have ever had at UCSB. Avoid her class and office hours at all possible. She teaches using experiments as outlines...confusing.
I enjoyed the class--thought she was a very effective and knowledgeable professor.
