Lectures could be boring at times, but Prof Miller is witty and does their best to keep things interesting. There are weekly homework assignments, two midterms, and a final. As long as you do the practice exams, you should be fine. I found sections to be a complete waste of time but that depends on the TA.
PSTAT 5LS with Miller is a walk in the park. They are super understanding of life situations, have very clear lecture material, and great practice material. They implement several "lowest grade dropped" for homework, section attendance, and journal entries. Literally just do the practice test and review lecture notes and you'll be golden for exams.
Prof. Miller was a great professor. Their tests were fair and sections helped my understanding of the material a lot (not a waste of time to go!). Overall minimal effort needed to still be successful. Also, to get full credit on homework go to office hours to check your answers.
Professor Miller was very, very caring for their students, honestly amazing in that regard. Lectures were a bit boring I would say and some tangents, the class is overall easy and there are a few tricks sometimes on the exams, but the homeworks were easy (weekly) and journaling too. 2 sections per week for a little bit of coding and review.
Professor Miller is a great professor! The class was honestly pretty low-stakes, and all you really need to do for exams is look over the slides and take section time seriously. 2 midterms and a final, and extra credit is offered. You can definitely tell they really cared for their students, and really hoped the best for us. Highly recommend!
Doc is an amazing lecturer! This class is super easy and felt like high school stats honestly. Doc is super understanding and you can tell that they genuinely care about their students. Weekly homework and journaling, but it's not that time consuming. Highly highly recommend this stats class.
For pstat5LS lectures are so light and the tests are exactly like the practice tests. The workload is light and the professor is very understanding. Would recommend taking for easy A as long as you sorta pay attention.
Doc is an absolutely incredible professor. Their lectures are pretty simple and they break down example problems very well. They're super accommodating as well and sometimes will share little anecdotes about their life. Made stats so easy and I never felt stressed. If you get the chance, take class with Miller!
if i could i would take this class again !!!! the way they teach makes it so easy to understand and the course itself isn't hard and can score well easily. and extra credit !!!!!!
Makes statistics VERY easy. Compared to other stats classes this is very manageable. Very clear teaching and provides examples of all problems that will be on exams. So as long as you learn how to do each of the problems during class, you will do good on the exams. And if you ever have problems, he was always able to explain how to fix it.
the lecture slides and the practice exam are really helpful for study.
Professor Miller is probably the best professor I've had in the stats department so far. I took 120A in the summer and thought it was going to be extremely difficult but professor Miller's lectures made everything clear and the practice exams were pretty similar to the tests and definitely prepared me.
The workload is reasonable there's only one HW per week. I would recommend attending section because it helps to grasp the material better, particularly if you find Professor Miller's teaching style challenging, as I did. Nothing wrong with lectures just weren't for me. My TA Monte was very helpful and kind. I didn't study much just do the HW.
If you have to take PSTAT take 5LS with Doc Miller! Miller is so incredibly helpful especially if you go to office hours and ask any questions that you have. Office hours were the best as you got to work with peers and check your homework which was never too difficult. Tests were pretty reflective of the practice exams.
I was dreading taking this class, but Miller made me love stats! If you attend lecture and lab and do assignments on time, you are basically guaranteed to do well in this class. Miller is a great professor who explains everything clearly and makes class expectations clear. There are plenty of opportunities to earn points in this class.
Amazing professor! Professor Miller was truly one of my favorite professors that I've had at UCSB. They made lectures engaging and made sure that everyone who asked questions fully understood the concepts. They explained all the content and noted what would and wouldn't be on exams. Highly recommend taking a class with Professor Miller!
Great professor, I got a lower grade because I didn't do amazing on the tests. The homework was probably the hardest part of the class in my opinion. Labs were super easy.
Amazing professor!! Miller is extremely kind and truly wants to get to know you and help you succeed in their class. First professor I felt like I could talk to as a friend. Lectures were very informative, and not too much work. Im terrible at math but ik I at least passed this class, and I actually ended up liking stats in the end of the quarter.
They are such a great professor. Gives so many resources to study from and the exam reviews are just like the actual exams. Exams are also pretty easy and they give a lot of partial credit too. Wish they taught 120B as well. Lectures were easy to follow albeit a little boring at times. One of the best professors I've ever had and highly recommend.
Great Professor, cares about their students. The course grade was based 80% on exams, but they were extremely fair and the exam practice prepares you well. If you have the option to take them for the 120 series, definitely go for it.
I liked Professor Miller, and class was easy if you attended lecture. You can tell they care a lot about their students, but lectures could get a bit boring and repetitive at times.
Miller is a great professor. With some effort, this class should not be a problem at all. Topics are easy to grasp, and they provide you really decent note sets. All you need is given to you, just devote time to study if you need and as much as you need. Personally, I did study one day before the exam and didn't go to any lectures after week 1.
Professor Miller is a very caring, passionate and kind teacher! The material is very manageable and they are very fair with the homework load. The tests are very representative of the homework, labs, and practice exams as long as you put in some work! If you get the opportunity/need to take PSTAT as a prerequisite for a major I highly recommend.
Dr. Miller is a great professor and PSTAT 5LS is a very fair course. If you go to lecture, do the homework and the labs, and study a little bit for every test, you are almost guaranteed an A or a B. Dr. Miller is very caring about students and it is obvious they want everyone to succeed. Nothing but positive things to say.
