Very unconventional and easygoing professor. He definitely leans heavily on the liberal side but for into crim law purposes he's AWESOME!! He's open to extended discussion, he will research and come back with answers to random hypos people come up with, always available. Glad I got to mixup the hohum law experience with him!!
I dont know if it was because it was summer, but somethin was missin. I respect the teacher, but wasnt really feelin the class. We watched an episode of the boondox about white jesus and then just ended the class without ever explaining what that has to do with our criminal justice system. I was waitin for the connection & never got it.
I expected so much more. I heard so much about this professor named "spearit" and when i finally took his class it was THE MOST unorganized, rudimentary class I have ever had at UCSB. The standard he held us to was not matched by the quality of his teaching, for which I feel jipped. Midterm & final seemed thrown together 5 minutes before class
He is definitely an unconventional professor but is great because he deciphers the (stodgy) realm of law in a way which is understandble by the average person. He also pushes you to really think in very different ways. I also liked his use of music in the class.
one of the most enlightening and thought provoking classes ever taken...very knowledgeable about subject matter and refreshingly passionate while presenting it...very critical approach to current conditions...go to class, listen in lecture, and note main thesis of each reading and u will bust an a...hot dreds too
class is a "real" awakening to whats going on. Challenges the norm...make sure you get Jorge T.A. totally cool, memorize thesis of readings and you'll Ace..go to the Jail trips! and get Spearits rap CD,tight!
SpearIt would have been a great teacher except he was never there.
SpearIt is awesome. A little extreme but thats his business. Respect his opinons and he will respect yours. Its his class, he gets to teach what he wants, be glad its interesting, applicable sh!t. His tests are pretty hard core, but if you dont half-ass the readings you'll have an A for sure. He is there for his students. Dont hate the player..
Spearit teaches a one sided liberal point of view. He teaches a very biased class and when challenged with a conservative point of view he refuses to listen and changes the subject.
this class was extremely interesting. subjects were real. interesting way of teaching one day you're watching a movie next day your on a field trip inside county jail. learned a lot from this class.

down to earth teacher very cool
Spearit is the man!!! He is there to teach...(period)! If you are lucky enough to take one of his classes you will exposed to a whole new way of thinking and ability to question basic assumptions of how the world works. He is there to reach young minds,
very engaging teacher, i highly recommend him for anyone who's intersted in the criminal justice system or just a new way of looking at things.
His views were radical but also unorginal. When he didn't know the answer to a question rather than take the time to work it through with class participation he opted to end class early.. Over all it was an experience I'd rather never have again
he is a really good teacher, and brings up a lot of radical views that test modern standards. also grading wise, the class is cake
Very liberal. Offered only one sided views on all topics. Very unhelpful. And final consisted of the entire first half of the course. Everything learned in the second half was a waste.
SpearIt is cool although as another person wrote, he is extremely liberal. He comes at you with these crazy angles but they keep you interested so it's cool. Exams were extremely fair although the final was cumulative which is tough-- you have to go back and re-read the material from the beginning
Very thought provoking class. Lots of films and interesting subjects. Unfortunatley, blatant extreme liberal bias dominates the class... but still worth taking.

Very thought provoking; lets students lead the class; analyses things from all angles. Throws a lot of curve **** just when you thought you knew what he was all about. An AWESOME professor/TA; wouldn't miss an opportunity to be in his class.
