Joe is a very sweet man, but his lectures can get boring. His class overall is pretty easy with 3 quizzes (15pts each), simple 5pt assignments, and some extra credit. Just have to read a few articles each week and follow the lecture outlines that he gives out. Not sure if I'd go out of my way to have him again, but also wouldn't be mad if I did.
Joe is an awesome professor. He is extremely helpful and cares about his students. Nonetheless this class is definitely challenging, if you pay attention in class, ask questions and attend office hours you will do fine.
Joe is such a great professor! Class had 3 exams, a group quiz, and some random participation assigments. Gives 5% extra credit for sona, gives extra credit on group quiz, and curves exams.
I'm so sorry this was the most boring class I've ever taken. Prof droned on for hours in a super monotone voice that was hard to stay awake through. Clearly not too receptive of class behavioral feedback, either.
I absolutely love Professor Walther. He really helped guide my through his course. His weekly quizzes can be tricky but if you do the readings, and go to TA office hours every week, the TA will help guide you on what concepts to focus on. That really helped me get through the course. He was extremely understanding and cares a lot about his students
Professor Walther is one of the most caring professors I've met. His class is graded on weekly quizzes and light participation, it's not an easy class but it isn't too hard either. When I expressed how I was stressed, him and his TA really helped guide me through it. He truly wants to see his students succeed, and you'll learn SO much from him.
Joe is my favortie professor! He is so knowledgeable, patient, and caring for students. He's always happy and welcome students to go to his office hour. As long as you attending the lecture and finish the reading, it's not hard to get an A. So take his class, and you'll truly learn a lot from him!!
Don't know how Walther has a 4, he is the worst COMM professor I've ever had. His quizzes are wrought with trick questions and minute details (once, an entire page was "all of the above"). He is also not accommodating of his students' struggles and is very self-congratulatory when assigning his own research.
If you have the chance to learn from Professor Walther, TAKE IT ! Professor Walther is an internationally known academic who has conducted some fascinating research in the Comm field, so to be able to learn directly from him is truly incredible. He gives you the tools to success, you just have to put in the work! Wish I could take him again!!
Such a Great Professor! Highly recommend! Took him fall quarter 2020 and was very understanding of the whole pandemic situation. Grades were based on 7-8 ish weekly quizzes (one dropped), a group quiz, participation, and extra credit for sona. His lectures were always so interesting and could be taken asych or sync. Overall an amazing class 10/10.
Joe is awesome! He's a personable and compassionate professor and an early expert at computer mediated communication (CMC). You can choose to attend synchronously or async and attend an optional weekly seminar. Many different options for course credit with weekly quizzes and offered research extra credit. Interesting course and honest professor.
I took 185 with Prof Walther last spring, and he's hands-down my favorite comm professor. But few disclaimers. His class relies heavily on group quizzes that can be difficult depending on who's in your group. His quizzes are also quite tricky, but they're definitely manageable. Just pay attention to the details of each research article assigned.
That is not clear for the group quiz. The crazy man.
Take Joe's class! Joe is so smart and one of the most knowledgeable in the department. He cares so much for his students and does not want to see anyone fail. He is also the nicest man. His class is not easy but it is also not that hard. If you pay attention, study, and ask questions there is no way you should do bad. Highly recommend this class.
He is very out of touch with modern technology and communication for someone teaching a class on it. Grading for this class is not clear at all. Seems obsessed with online dating for some reason. I paid attention all quarter and walked away feeling like I learned nothing beyond phone calls are better at dispelling racism.
