She has so much knowledge to offer and it was such an interesting course to take! I do think that the units material had a lot of work, but the quizzes + discussions were easy points. The 3 papers were fine as long as you carefully follow the instructions. She ended up giving us extra credit too, I definitely recommend taking her!
Nothing to complain about for the lectures, although a bit repetitive. The discussion posts and quizzes are easy points as long as you do them. However, the difficulty of this course comes with the grading of the three writing assignments. Prof. Taylor claims they are graded harsher to compensate for the easiness of the weekly assignments.
Avoid. Never took SOC155 with this professor. Never. I'm good at writing, but the three assignments really hits me. I never received any detailed written feedback from my TA, and all of the TAs are harsh grader. I don't know who can get A in this class.
Lecture credit is mandatory, but I feel like I gained more from her posted lectures from covid rather than in person. She goes on tangents a lot and loves to hear herself talk but the overall class is interesting. The grading criteria of "excellent" isn't clear on essays. Weekly quizzes and 3 papers
I never have a class with such awesome Lectures. They are well-organized and easy to get. However, the assignments are twice a week, 3 pages maximum, and it is very harshly graded the mean score is always 140/200. It has a section of "writing everything excellently ", but we just do not know what does excellently mean.
Every week, quizzes and discussions can be easy ways to earn points. However, the problem lies in assignment #1~3, which constitutes a significant portion of the grade. Despite following all the instructions, the grading for these assignments was very harsh. If you are good at writing, try this course. After this class, I really hate gender things.
Interesting class with well-presented material. Lectures are engaging and easy to follow. Two easy quizzes each week along with two discussion posts, and then three large papers to do throughout the course. Material is easy to understand, but the papers were graded somewhat harshly; I followed along the whole quarter and still ended up with a B.
This class was interesting but she sure does ramble on a lot, you learn most of the content outside of class. The twice weekly quizzes are easy but she grades harshly on the papers. In class discussion posts are easy points. She can be funny but you learn mostly from the lectures she posts online.
Professor Taylor consistently and quickly responded to my emails and was always very helpful. Grade was made up of weekly discussion posts, reading quizzes, and three short papers. The papers were relatively easy, and she provided detailed rubrics that broke down how to earn points. Lots of reading, but it was pretty interesting.
Professor Taylor knows the work she assigns is extremely stress inducing and UNREASONABLE but she does not care. She loves to hear herself talk, gives extremely boring lectures, 1 assignment a week that takes hours. Before even being done with an assignment she'll start talking about the next one. Leaving all students confused and stressed.
Fall 2021. I was nervous bc we use STATA which is statistical software but Taylor made STATA fun and interesting. She is passionate about statistics and it is easy to follow along with her lectures, very organized and engages students to participate in class. Quizzes online each week were easy. The assignments were not bad especially with TA help
I took Professor Taylor Spring 2021. Unfortunately had a really hard TA, graded essays to the exact detail. Also, at the end of the course Professor had the chance to round my B+ to an A-. However with nothing written on the syllabus, so I emailed the Professor and TA multiple times! NO RESPONSE! It was frustrating, I had a horrible experience.
it was her first time teaching remotely so it was understandable why she had difficulty at times and we would start class late. But her lectures mainly consist of just reading slides and getting into groups to discuss & after a while it gets boring. papers were 1-2 pages max & professor allows u to come to her to proofread papers before submitting
my favorite professor i've taken at UCSB, very easy to talk to, easy to understand in lecture
Cate is super nice/ has good intentions for this course, would be a good 1st soc upper div! She may seem repetitive but she brings a lot of insightful discussion during class. She calls on random ppl in lecture and thats where it probably gets awk. Weekly quizzes+in-class writeups (required attendance), 3 short papers, 1 final exam, easy readings!
Projected gay slurs on the screen which the whole class proceeded to laugh at. Declared homophobia to be over. Such basic material, graded extremely unfairly. Pretty sure everyone was bored to tears every day.
Not the best sociology class (intro to gender), esp considering that its upper div. Professor is painfully vague, using more personal anecdotes than specific sources. Will state common knowledge as if she is teaching something new. Ive taken a few different soc and fem classes at UCSB and this has been my least favorite. Learned nothing new.
Cate is awesome! This was her first class at UCSB, she used to teach at UI Bloomington. She's incredibly caring and understand. 3 short essays (3 pages each) weekly quizzes and weekly participation write ups, and MC final. This class was Special Topics Gender In Sexuality and I cant wait to take more! Super interesting and easy. Dont buy the book!
