- Easy/light workload - A few essays to write for the quarter -HW was just to annotate the given text or reply to other people's responses -Overall I highly recommend :)
I took this class first semester at UCSB and I hate writing but honestly loved this class. There was a fair share of papers but for the most part, we got to pick our topic and I liked writing them. I would definitely take this class again. Super thankful for him introducing me to Zotero!
He's so funny, I genuinely loved his class and going to it. Super fun teacher. He posts a lot of reading stuff but it's not really bad. He leaves lots of comments and gives tons improvement tips. Just be nice to him and you'll have a great time. His final is a bit scary but if you pick a topic you're interested in it'll be fine.
Good prof allows chatGPT. A lot of freedom in homework and attendance. Grade generously.
Dr. Frank is a great prof. He really cares about his students and the class. A great thing is that he is not a very tough grader, so you don't need to feel much pressure in his class. Do the work (very manageable load) come to class and participate and I'm sure you'll get a very good grade. Only negative is that his feedback doesn't cut too deep.
Dr. Frank is absolutely the best professor/instructor I've ever met at UCSB. The class is fun and includes lots of interesting assignments and projects. Would take it again for sure. Highly recommended.
Amazing professor! I am not a strong writer and was dreading this class as I worried it would be difficult. I was completely proven wrong! He provides very in depth and encouraging feedback. The course topics were flexible which allowed you to pursue topics that interest you! I left the class with so much more confidence and great writing skills.
Please take him!! He is the best professor I have ever met. Caring, thoughtful, inspirational, knowledgable... He is a perfect professor and I had a wonderful summer session with him. He is lenient about the deadlines and attendance, but please attend because he encourages a lot of group collaborations and inspires you a lot.
I promise you he is the best professor ever. Always inspirational and amazing lectures with clear, delicately designed slides. He is very lenient about the deadlines and understands what's happening around you. He offers detailed feedback on every single assignment, even providing a recorded video of feedback on your project. Please, take him!!!
Best writing professor ever! Classes were exciting and engaging with lots of innovative practices and group discussions. I would definitely take Dr. Frank's course again. Highly recommended.
He is the best professor I've met in UCSB!
Dr. Frank is great! Classes are generally PowerPoints that he lectures over; all of the slides were available online and understandable without being in the lecture-- although those were graded for attendance. Dr. Frank is quite lenient on deadlines and grades generously. The class relies on an online textbook (~$25) but it's pretty clear & useful.
He is a funny professor and his class is interesting most of the time.dr.frank's writing 2e is entirely geared towards learning how to do technical writing. however, he is very encouraging in taking technical writing to creative fields. he grades fairly and gives you actually helpful feedback, and his "deadlines" are very forgiving.
I never rate professors but Professor Daniel Frank is a real gem. I find his classes enjoyable to go to. However, there is a lot of homework every week but nothing hard. There's a 5000 word final project but throughout the quarter you work on it making it easier in the end. I love his personality and would totally take this class again.
Honestly the best class at UCSB. The class completely changes the way you approach research and is heavily focused on career development (job talks, etc). The prof has a quirky personality, which makes the lectures enjoyable. The final group project and portfolio was hefty so I got a bit of burn out, but overall the class goes at a good pace.
Professor Frank rocks. This was by far one of my favorite classes I've taken at UCSB. The class is genuinely enjoyable instead of being overloaded with research papers we were assigned various interesting projects that were unorthodox in the best way possible. Would recommend this class to anyone
Dr Frank is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is literally so nice and understands that everyone is at different levels in terms of graphic designs. The assignments were a little challenging but not too bad and he gives good feedback. His lectures are short and funny. If you have a chance to take him, PLEASE DO
incredibly funny professor with lots of helpful writing tips!
He was an energetic, quirky lecturer, but I can't recommend taking him; he insisted on an even split of A's/B's, so even a 97% became an A-. A lot of weekly busy work, including writing 600+ words, recording webcam talks, participating in Slack, and more. Also a project every two weeks, and a 5000-word final project. Fully asynchronous class.
Frank is great! for 105M you create a piece of media every week, whether that be a website or flyer. The class is quite a deviation from your conventional writing class and is perfectly suited for COVID19 online learning era. As long as you put in effort, you will get an A!
I had him for Writing 2 and he was a really great guy. I am not much of a writer, honestly, but he made the class really enjoyable. He gives a lot of work throughout the quarter, but if you complete the work and do it well you will leave with a good grade. Great guy 10/10 would take again.
I don't usually submit ratings on here but Dr. Frank made a technical writing course (which sounds like it'd be the most mundane topic ever) genuinely enjoyable. He lets you choose your project topics based on your interests and grades very fairly. Super nice guy and always full of energy, wish my other writing courses could've been like this one
I'm currently in 105M, so as of week 7 he is awesome. He's quirky, caring, and energetic. Homework is manageable assignments due weekly (e.g. create a poster) with author's note. He has clear grading criteria & is always generous w/ grades. Ungraded in-class small group projects. Final project is up to you in terms of topic and medium. Easy A & fun
