If you can memorize facts, you'll pass this class. Lectures aren't mandatory, which is nice. Read all of the textbook and go to section; questions from there sneak up on the final. The assigned papers are a different story. There is not a lot of material to study so you'll need good knowledge of the era to make speculative points.

Lecture is not mandatory for tests are based off the textbook. Lectures are pretty boring as well. Most self study and self taught class. Take if you are willing to do a lot of reading and if you like history. If not, it will be a "fun" quarter!

HIST17A . 10 Years Ago

She was a decent teacher. No need to go to class because she puts all her lectures online, and it's basically just a regurgitation of the textbook. The essays were difficult because the prompts were so vague and we had such little source information to choose from. There's so little to analyze from that it's mostly just speculation.

She was flat out awful. There was no point attending lecture because she put her lecture powerpoints online, thus you never really learn anything and when the final comes you're screwed. AND she is a really boring lecturer.

She's a really boring lecturer although her voice is really soothing to the ears! Her final was definitely one of the toughest exams I've ever taken... 100 MC and 1 essay (but she gives you 6 essay prompts beforehand as a study guide). Her final has questions on readings covered during sections! Read before attending lecture. Not an easy GE at all!

She is a good lecturer, but you don't have to go to lecture because the class relies heavily on textbook use. READ the textbook and do ALL the reading because she puts questions from the articles on tests.

Even though attendance wasn't mandatory, it's highly recommended. Great professor! Only thing is, is that you NEED to read the book. Plain and simple. If you read, you'll do well on the tests. Essays prompts were vague and required lots of your own ideas but not TOO difficult, especially if you've taken an AP class. I got a B+ and an A on them.

She is a really good lecturer but the organization of this class I think gave people problems. The biggest issue was with the essays as they consisted of vague prompts (which I don't have an issue with) but only allowed the student to use a very specific (and minimal) collection of source material. My TA's grading method was also inconsistent.

Attendance to class is not mandatory. Lectures were unclear and you were not tested on that material. Great professor though!

Great historian! But terrible teacher. She would come unprepared to lecture several times without her notes, or powerpoint. Her lectures are interesting, but are on material you won't be tested on. I thought class would be mandatory to do well, but it's NOT. Read ALL of the material assigned to you and go to section to succeed! Not an easy class.

One of the best! She is the reason I became a history major and now a tenured history teacher. Quit complaining about the reading & having to attend lectures.

boy this was a def. a toughie! to pass this class, you must read all literature and get on your TA's good side. make sure you get her powerpoints, but take additional notes. PLEASE PLEASE go to class, because reading alone does not cut it. trust me, im a history major

Class was sooo boring!! She had powerpoints online which helped, but the powerpoints weren't very clear unless you went to class. Power points had random bullet points and none of the information flowed together. Both Mid-term and Final had the most random identifications and the paper we had to write was on the most random literature.

Reading is very important and there is a lot of it. Her knowledge for the subject is impressive. Powerpoint slides outline most key points but taking additional notes helps. The 2 novels you have to read are not that interesting.

Prof. Cohen was an excellent teacher. i am looking forward to taking more classes with her because of her knowledge on the subject matter. the books that we had to read during class were okay not to bad. you should read textbook. if you go to lecture and pay attention you should be able to pass with a C at least. Her powerpoints=great outlines.

Cohen is a reeally good professor. She knows what shes talking about and there really is no need to attend the lecture since role is not taken as long as you read the textbook and keep yourslef up to date.

Cohen really loves the subject and is very knowledgable of it. Excellent professor, very cleat lectures, though she does tend to go fast sometimes.

Cohen is a good teacher. The papers, midterm, and final were a little sketchy from her handouts, but they turned out to not be so bad. There is a TON of reading, but if you pay attention in class and read at least the most important stuff you should do good.

Cohen really enjoys her subject matter and brings it to life for the students; I can't wait to take another class from her
