Robert is a kind and passionate guy, and you can tell from the way he teaches. He's flexible and genuinely seems to care more that we learn the material than pass a test about it (I appreciated no midterms or final). He takes the lesson feedback and applies it to his next classes. Inspiring, thoughtful lectures! I can't say enough good things.
Course is really nice and not too intense if you're economic major. Way of teaching nice and you can learn in your own pace. Would recommend the course. It's interesting and makes student engaged. very good real life examples and references to real life.
Robert is a very caring professor, but this class is hard! It's really rewarding and useful for ES careers in GIS, but it is a time commitment. The class is weekly labs, midterm and final group project. He's super nice and genuinely cares about his students - go to OH! He's approachable and happy to help, but you have to ask the questions
Taught very well by using fun examples, and the math was basic. Class time is used to do activities and small experiments, and outside class you had to watch the lectures online. The textbook is optional since the lectures cover the main material, but it's good additional help. There were no midterm/ finals, only weekly assignments that were easy.
Robert made me care about econ. love that guy.
I loved this professor, and he made content I'm pretty neutral on much more interesting. However, if you take a shot every time he says "Does this broadly make sense?" you will be absolutely hammered by the end of the 1 hour 15 min lecture time.
Most engaging class I've taken, prof is friendly and understanding, lectures are clear and concise. Amount and difficulty of work is very doable and challenges students to think and apply course material to real world concepts without making it too stressful. 10/10 It changed my view on econ and I loved the class so much I was sad when it ended..
Super understanding and cool. Pay attention in class & lectures, do the hw, & go to office hours in order to get a good grade. There's a good bit of hw every week but it's easily doable. I'm not an econ major but the prof really made everything easy to understand and I learned A LOT. I highly recommend this class and this prof!!
Super kind and caring. This was the first econ class I ever took and made me realize economics and enviro (my major) can go hand in hand. If you pay attention and put in effort getting a good grade will not be an issue. I learned so much and totally recommend this class and any opportunity to be taught by Prof Heilmayr.
nice guy, very understanding, works with you and doesn't grade harsh
Robert is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB, he really cares and is ready to work with you to help you succeed. The homework was definitely tricky but if you go to office hours you will do great, he is really helpful. He is very understanding and kind, and his lectures are applicable and very interesting. He links econ with envs well.
Professor Heilmayr is such a kind and caring person. He really cares about the wellbeing of every student and wants everyone to do well. Definitely take his class if you get the chance. Material is a little confusing but going to office hours definitely helps!
This was my favorite professor I have taken at UCSB. He is extremely informative and fair. His lectures are interesting and his homework is helpful for learning. Him and the TA were extremely willing to make sure EVERY student understood a concept before moving on. He patiently answered questions no matter how stupid. Amazing professor.
Robert is a great guy, and the class is really interesting. It was way easier before the midterm and got pretty hard after that, but it is manageable. Note that you'll probably have to go to office hours if you want to do well in the class as the homework is pretty hard so you'll need some help. Overall I had a pretty great experience in this class
Has fun practical economic games in class with real money/candy prizes.
Extremely interesting class. Showed how econ is actually relevant in environmentalism. Lots of interesting simulations too. Heads up though - decent amount of calculus involved.
