Dr. Conroy-Beam is great! He is super funny and makes his lectures very engaging. His quizzes are a little tough, but very fair. There are no midterms/finals or essays, just 5 quizzes (one every two weeks) and a few short assignments. Make sure to show up for lecture and you will be fine.
Professor is super knowledgeable and passionate about evolutionary psych and his lectures are very clear. He was always prepared and never stumbled over explaining anything. He did go over a lot of slides in one class and spoke a bit fast at times. Class is very evolutionary based (not just about human relationships), so be prepared for that.
This class was interesting and gave a lot of insight to human relationships from an evolutionary perspective. He always brings up interesting studies and I like how he incorporates data from our class into lectures. The assignments are really easy, but the rest of the grade is quizzes, which may be difficult to ace, but are fair.
One of my favorite professors I've had at UCSB. Amazing lecturer and not a super time intensive class. 5 quizzes and then a couple surveys that take like 5 minutes max.
the class was made up of 5 quizzes with the lowest one dropped, lecture questions, and lab participation. the quizzes could be tough as he adds challenge questions, but as long as you show up to the lecture days were he gives out the code you could pass them. I never went to office hours but he always talked about being available to help students.
Conroy-Beam made the class extremely easy grade-wise. Quizzes are the only thing you need to worry about (everything else is basically participation), so make sure to attend his lectures where he's sharing the R code. Have the R code and slides pulled up for a good grade.
I never write reviews on rate my professor, but Professor Conroy-Beam deserves it! He has a true talent of making course content fascinating, even if it's evolutionary psychology which I never thought I'd be into. I felt intrinsically motivated to pay attention because he was just that engaging and fun. Tests can be challenging, but they're fair.
I just realized I never rated him for 10B when I took it last year, but I'm signing up for classes right now and saw he's teaching 143, and I'm taking it solely because he's the prof. Absolutely love him he's such a nice guy, and he really makes it easy to pass his class if you can follow instructions. Without a doubt my favorite prof at UCSB.
Such a fun professor, likes to get participation in his lectures and helps us master concepts in R coding. fair grader and tester, reviews material from last few lectures in current lectures. material is addressed clearly and in an organized way, easy to understand.
Straightforward, easy-to-follow lectures. Used a flipped-classroom method so that we could get a chance to ask questions, run codes in R together, etc. No midterm or final but had a total of 5 quizzes, with one every 2 weeks. Overall, really enjoyed his teaching style & the structure/organization of the class.
I love Prof. Dan! He is very funny and works hard to make his lectures interesting, relatable, and easy to understand. His quizzes can be difficult, but he gives you all of the tools to succeed. There is no midterm or final, and none of the quizzes are cumulative.
My favorite class i've taken at UCSB so far! His examples make the lectures easy to understand and fun to watch.
Definitely, definitely my favorite class I've taken at UCSB. "Human Relationships" is such a broad topic, but the class infused evolutionary psychology to explain so many facets of why humans do what we do- siblings, dating, parenting etc. Just so interesting to learn all this stuff, and the online lectures were really funny. Absolutely recommend.
Professor Conroy Beam was actually an accommodating professor. Something I liked about his class is how his lectures were divided into multiple portions. This made it less intimidating and draining than a 1 hr lecture. The quizzes were not that hard. You just need to listen to lectures and skim the readings. This class was very manageable.
Never write these but I almost didn't take his class because his rating really does not do him justice! He put together an amazing online course, with prerecorded lectures and online quizzes that made you learn without being difficult. The course material is really interesting and prof. Conroy-Beam is funny and overall just pleasant to listen to!
Conroy-Beam is a really engaging lecturer and he's wonderful with explanations. The problem with 10B is that he doesn't teach statistics properly/holistically. I would discuss the teachings of 10B with my statistician friends and they would say that the teacher taught many concepts quite differently than what is actually used by real statisticians
He was a very nice and caring teacher. He posted all of his lectures online so you didn't have to go to class, but he was great at instructing, too. He gave clear examples and definitions of concepts in stats. His tests were also very straight forward - I would definitely recommend taking him!
Conroy-Beam makes sure everyone understands material before moving on and creates an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions. Test and homework averages were always high and he's always willing to help clarify more difficult subjects.
He is a very helpful and funny professor BUT his test are very difficult and assigned readings are abundant. One midterm and a final. if you do bad te first test you can retake it during the final. you have to study and pay attention a lot in this class.
This was a surprisingly difficult class. I've gotten A's in my other evolutionary psych classes, and this one I scraped by with a B. I think he should have curved it. He made it too hard to get an A. Wish I would have known this class was gonna drop my GPA or I wouldn't have taken it. You never know with these new professors.
Never gotten a low grade in my college career, honor student. I did not pass. Tried really hard. I had no backround in evolutionary psychology. Prof says tests are 30 book 70 lecture but I diagree. The test questions are phrased VERY consfusing. Multiple correct answers, but there is one MOST correctanswer. I have to retake it next quarter.
An evolutionary psych class. Not a social psych class. Focuses on Evolution; Mating strategies; why Parent/ cooperate. Good: 12% grade is online surveys, 44% midterm and 44% final. It's same stuff from PSY155 but less material and focuses on just Relationships. New young profmore relatable. No study guides. Friendly&Helpful! READ EVERY SENTENCE.
