has some really interesting optional lectures about her papers and other topics, but the rest of the lectures are basically standard upper div psyc stuff. tests are pretty difficult, study the lectures and the book. %40 midterm and %40 final, plus %20 paper responses which i think are just graded on completion
There's a lot to ready but it's mostly the same material as lecture. The in-person exams are somewhat difficult. The grading scheme is 3 easy assignments worth 20% total and 2 exams.
Professor Jacobs is super sweet, but she's using online lectures from a different professor in a flipped classroom style. You're not actually taking a class from Jacobs which is a bummer. The lectures and material are super dense and the other professor is difficult to follow. It's hard to stay on top of everything.
Dr. Jacobs is really cool but with the online option this quarter, it seems like the class is a little harder to stay on top of than in person. She has online lectures from a previous prof posted and we are supposed to learn of the other prof's lectures for her tests. She seems really nice and passionate about the subject.
Took it Fall 2020. Grade based mostly on midterm & final. Exams with time crunch but still wants every little possible detail even if the question doesnt seem like it requires it. Hard to receive full credit even with good details. She also didnt let us see the feedback of our final & gave grades at the very last moment so you cant say anything
One of the best classes/professors I have ever taken! Really passionate about the course and delivers it in a way that makes you want to pay attention. Most of grade based on midterm & final but manageable with diligent note-taking and decent study time.
She's an amazing professor who definitely cares about her students and really wants to inspire you. The textbook is a good assist and I used it for the diagrams, but she tests from her slides anyways. The tests are a mix of FR and MC so make sure you take thorough notes in class because FR's usually on that.
Grading on the free response portions of exams is harsh, and hard to receive full credit no matter how much you expand on your answer. Got a 87 on the final and ended up with a 79.9 in the class and she refused round. Something she'll never think about again like rounding a grade, affects a student for a lifetime by defining them by a %
She was a great lecturer and very inspiration. I didn't receive the grade I was aiming for, however, I still loved the course and learned A LOT. I highly recommend. Her passion for the topic made the class even more enjoyable. I like how the course focused more on learning the material and critical thinking rather than just memorization.
If you're looking to cut down study time, take this class with 137 - there's a lot of overlap. Weekly reading responses (35%) kinda tedious, but not difficult. Group project (35%) didn't require a lot of work either. Final (30%) consisted of couple dozen FR Q's along with some MC. Be as specific in your answers as possible, and you'll be fine.
Professor Jacobs is an amazing lecturer. She is extremely passionate about the subject matter. I also took her for 137 and I highly recommend both classes. Tests are very fair, and readings are super interesting if you are into hormones. Definitely take her classes if you get the chance!
The content of the class is based off the lectures. You don't need to read the textbook as the slides in class are sufficient for the test. The information is interesting to learn. Your grade in class is based off midterm final and 3 simple write up
Professor Jacobs was amazing! There was a lot of reading but it's very interesting stuff. The textbook was very helpful. Midterm and final were both multiple choice and short answer. There was also a writing assignment. Very enthusiastic, definitely take her if you get the chance!
Prof. Jacobs is a truly inspiring person. She is very passionate about what she teaches. You won't want to miss a single lecture. Her exams were fair. Grade was based on midterm, final (short answer + multiple choice), and a short reading response. Would definitely recommend her.
Emily was an amazing professor. She made 3 hour class sessions go by in a breeze. One of the few professors who are not only passionate about their work, but also truly care about what her students gain in her classroom. Take her if you have a chance!
Jacobs is an awesome lecturer. No required textbook but there is a little bit of required reading from PDF's and online journals. Reading responses, free response final and in class group project presentations make up the entire grade. Super interesting material and highly I recommend to other biopsych students.
Professor Jacobs is truly an amazing and inspirational individual. She is very approachable and wants everybody to learn as much as she can offer. The material was very applicable to the real-world and probably the most interesting I have ever had. TAKE HER if you get the chance no matter what time the class is offered.
Amazing professor. It's her first year teaching at UCSB. Great teaching style, passion, and understanding about the material. Definitely take her every chance you get.
