So its only 3 weeks into the quarter and Profe gets the son of Cesar Chavez to make a personal video greeting and inspirational message for us! It was amazing to hear from this legend's son, and for a class on Cesar Chavez it made it more REAL to me. Ive taken a class with Dr Garcia Martinez before, and these are the things he does. Its very nice.

His material can be confusing and not very engaging on top of that, he is very arrogant and doesn't care much about his students. He comes off as nice but at the end of the day, he just wants to hear himself talk and silence whoever doesn't agree with him. If you're a parent or have a job etc. stay away from this professor.

I've taken 2 classes with Dr. G-M and I'm totally serious when I say to IGNORE posts saying he's a terrible or awful professor. He has NEVER denied anyone a chance to express themselves in the classes that I sat in. In fact, he was ALWAYS trying to prompt us, but most of the class was busy with their phones or not doing doing the reading to talk.

He does not let you express how you interpreted the reading and he wants you to focus on how he saw tge reading. He wasnt very clear on one of the essay prompts and made it seem like it was the students fault when it was his lack of clear wording. It was honestly my least liked class while here at UCSB. There is no freedom for expression.

Wasnt a fan of the way he has his class structured. You have to really read in between the lines on all work and go with what he says. It seems like you arent allowed to have a mind of your own when it comes to the reading and how you react to it. His tests will can have fives answers for one point if you get them all correct otherwise you get .5

Profe was intimidating the first day. The first thing he said to us was Chicana literature is not activism, its not sociology, it is an artform, something aesthetic and amazing! He said it unapologetically and condescendingly, but he makes you curious and open to all its forms. Exams were WAY too specific, gave choices for paper, which is good.

I took this P/NP. Multiple choice was directly from lecture. Make sure you do the readings or he gets frustrated, and it is helpful for tests. He could come off a little arrogant at times, but he cared a lot about the subject. I almost wish we went more in depth and stayed more focused during lectures so I could have learned more.

Now that the final is done, Im in the clear and gotta say that Profes class was the most interesting experience I had. He gets you to know Chicana history and how to interpret it. He ran out of material while there was still a 1/2 left of lecture, and he made lame jokes, but Id totally take him again because hes smart and doesnt over-work you.

So I'm only 2 weeks into my summer class and already Dr. Garcia Martinez is one of my favorite Chicano teachers here. I kid you not. From his syllabus he really respects that students have a life outside of class because his assignments are limited and specific. He is so engaging that I stop taking notes just to listen to himand miss information!

Garcia-martinez was recommended by a friend and I was so happy I for once, listen to him. Showing up to this class was really easy because this teachers lectures are so fascinating! I literally liked everything I learned in this class. It is sort of sad though, that there are not more teachers like him. Take good notes and you'll do fine.

He's a cool guy really different teaching style and he has a lot to say. You can tell he knows what he is talking about. Even if your answer is wrong he still tries to see your point of view without embarrassing you. I noticed he likes to have the whole class involved in the lecture which is really cool.

Ok so I'll be honest, I thought I was getting punked by someone because I've never had a teacher like this. He's really visual and hold my attention for the whole class and he really clarifies anything. Id say he's one of the best teachers and I'm not even a chicano major.

We hit gold here! Wow, a real, authentic and genuine Professor engaging his students! I thought this only happened in movies, and now, it occurring right before my eyes and lo and behold at UCSB! Yeah! Kudos to whoever found this one. UCSB has been waiting and in dire need for him. Mind-blowing, original and really compels to think critically.

Where has the department been hiding this guy? The term has just begun and already I think he's my favorite professor--and I'm a graduating senior. So far so good, but if you like an honest, friendly, funny and smart lecturing style then enroll in his classes.
