Chapman knows the material well, but is unable to teach his students. I took calculus in high school and still struggled with his class. The homework is harder than the class and harder than the exams, only because it requires more math. Attend office hours and math lab. He has a very generous curve.

May he never teach again.

If I were to take his class again, I would go to every single one of his office hours, just sit there and do homework. His lectures are useless but he is a nice guy and he's willing to help. He explains stuff better at office hours and you will probably get a feel of how hard he's gonna make the exams if you spend enough time with him.

He's enthusiastic and knows the material. The problem is he's horrible at explaining things and making sure that you know the material. Test have consisted of a definitions section, which is useless if you you don't know what's going on in the class. Took calculus in high school and barely passed the class. Good luck if you didn't.

He usually kicks you out of lectures in 30 minutes, but that's ok his lectures aren't helpful anyway. He is so bad at explaining concepts. His final is so hard compare to how much he actually taught us. He basically expected EVERYBODY to have already taken calculus already in high school even thought that is not a requirement for this test.

Mr. Chapman knows the material well, but he is not good at explaining concepts. I took calculus in high school so I already knew the material, but the way he described it made no sense to me. If I had a question I would go to my TA's office hours instead of his because she explained concepts and problems in a much clearer way.

Overall, you will struggle if you haven't taken calculus before. The midterms were okay, but the final was extremely hard and require extra thinking. He has definitions and true/false on his tests. :( That being said he isn't a bad person. He knows his math and is willing to help. Study for the exams days before and pray for an easy final.

Chapman is the worst professor at UCSB, possibly in all of a North America. His tests contained material he had never given notes on, never before explained in section, and never before seen on any homework assignments. By far the worst professor I've had in my scholastic career.

I didn't take calculus in high school so I tried to learn everything the first time. He is just awful. He confused the hell out of me. And in result, I failed the class and more than half of the class did also. So just avoid him at all cost.

Apparently this was his first year teaching and I hope it is the last. The class goes by really fast and I understand why. He's really effective in covering al the material, but doesn't elaborate enough on some stuff... Even then the tests are disgusting. The first midterm was terrible, the second one was better, but the final was a death sentence

He makes you memorize precise definitions. All of his powerpoint slides contain major mathematical errors. He does not give straight answers. His lectures make no sense because he uses more words and definitions than actual mathematical examples. Worst math professor I've ever had!!!

Math 3A is usually not curved and the fact that this class is says a lot about the professor. His lectures are straight from the book and he just reads them. He makes a lot of mistakes in lecture. His midterms and final are unreasonably hard. We honestly don't know how the curve works. Everyone in class is also doing poorly. Avoid at all costs.

He's an intelligent person, but a terrible teacher. Plus his tests are organized terribly. Very difficult class

He couldn't explain anything without using the word "thing" 6 times. Also every lecture seemed to have at least 3 typos that would confuse everyone. He tries to explain everything in an advanced way, but he doesn't realize that no one knows what he's talking about so he loses everyone immediately. You just better hope you get a good TA.

This guy doesn't know how to teach, on top of that he said he was gonna curve the first midterm alone to make it out of 50 instead of 60 because everyone did poorly, now he's saying he is going to make both midterms together out of 112 instead of 120, less than the initial curve he said he would put on the first midterm alone. Not fair at all.

Nobody in his class can pay attention because he is so incredibly bad at teaching. Not to mention his frequent typos on the lecture slides continue to make people not want to listen. The tests are graded so harshly that even the slightest error will cause you to lose almost all credit on the problem, even if the rest of the work was correct.

Average for the first midterm was 60%. Said he thought is was most likely due to time restraints. Yeah okay guy. It's because you can't teach

Terrible professor. Seems very smart but absolutely terrible at communicating information in a clear way that you can learn from. If you are a mathematician you may enjoy listen to his useless ramblings. For the average student, don't expect to learn much from him. Also, there is often a disconnect between lesson and homework material. Avoid

Worst educator I have EVER encountered. His exams don't test the math skills you need to move on the higher maths, instead focusing on irrelevant things. Doesn't even have the decency to curve his exams, or provide any assistance to the dozens of students failing. His lectures are utter nonsense, and his attempt to teach USEFUL math is flawed.

I was quite the math student in my JC, i obviously put in the work like no other but boy was i in for a surprise when i took Chapman's class. Please do not take under any circumstances. lectures are unclear, examples are not presented in a well broken down manner, skips multiple steps, really tough midterm grader. AVOID!!

He doesn't talk about anything relevant or go over problems. Having not taken calculus in highschool, this class was extremely difficult and Chapman never explained anything.

He can't teach! All the TAs actually teach. All he does is talk about slides barely giving any examples. However, exam is very similar to study guide. He tries to help, but he obviously thinks the students are all mathematicians like him. DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM UNLESS REQUIRED!

Most awful teacher I've had at UCSB. Knows his stuff but can't teach it to save his life. Talks in mathematical gibberish. Average for the first midterm was a 63%
