This class I thought was super fun. Professor Bobo had personally interacted with every filmmaker we watched so she had great insight into the films. She gave ample time for discussion and made everyone feel welcome to their own opinions.
attendance wasn't mandatory to pass the class and do good on the essays. class only graded on three essays spaced throughout the quarter and a final paper at the end. super boring lectures, all you really need to do is watch part of the movies and that'll be enough to write the essay. idk if it was just my ta, but she graded easily.
Lectures were boring and pretty unrelated to the papers, so I only went when she played the films. The films were interesting and the papers were very broad and easy to write. Super easy class and prof so I recommend it if you need the credit.
Readings and weekly film. Most films were dated and inaccessible outside of lecture, but attendance technically not mandatory. Grade determined by 5 papers, each 20% of grade. 8 a.m. was a drag but content interesting and easy. Emphasize dissecting film techniques in papers, not just the message/importance. T.A. Katie Von Wald was the goat.
Easy course, one topic per week with a film and reading, and a short paper every couple of weeks. The course structure is easy to understand but Bobo's lectures are not the most engaging, especially at 8 am. Interesting topics and films discussed.
The class was interesting and I enjoyed the films, but lectures felt pointless since there weren't any slides or notes that needed to be taken. Overall the class was very manageable and pretty easy, the papers are short and the grading criteria is light.
The lectures with Bobo were a little difficult because she would mumble a lot and forget to move the slides in the presentation. The class itself was very fun because most of it was papers on the movies we watched. I would take her again.
Going to Bobo's lectures is not necessary to do well. My critique of this class (ironically) is the lack of representation of women of different cultures. 5/8 films were focused on black women, 1 on US soccer (white women), 1 Latino woman, 1 Native American (where the focus wasn't even on women), and not a single film about Asian American women.
I really enjoy talking to her! The movies she assigned each week were all thought-provoking. Though the readings were kind of heavy, they were effective in helping us understand each feminist in the movies! I do get to know a lot!
Lectures consist of a lot of extra videos, makes it a pain when the class is an 8am. Bobo is still a super interesting prof, and its very interesting to read her work on the films we watch in class. She's very kind and engaging!
Took this class online (COVID) and was disappointed when I never saw/heard from Prof Bobo. All assignments were graded by TAs and they were the only ones I ever came in contact with. Good reading material and videos, but I wish I could have learned from Prof Bobo herself.
Her online courses aren't the best. She doesn't do any pre-recorded or zoom lectures at all so it's pretty much just read the material and teach yourself. Three reading critiques (30% each) and one book response (10%), so it's a pretty straightforward course, she's just not very accessible and assignments are confusing. Not terrible, but not great.
I'm kind of surprised by Professor Bobo's score on here, I personally love her. I've taken FEMST 40, 142, and 143 from her and enjoyed them all. Does she get distracted in lectures sometimes? Yes. Are her readings/documentaries 30 years old? Yes. But honestly, her classes are very easy to succeed in if you just do work, especially now online
My TA was amazing, but I literally never saw Professor Bobo. Like, she did not post any lectures or anything and we did not interact with her at all. The class was based on weekly written and flipgrid responses and a final 2000 word paper. The midterm and final were cancelled because of rona.
I really liked Professor Bobo because she was pretty laid back while still being knowledgable about what she was speaking about. I think the lectures could have some improvement, a lot of it seemed irrelevant, like publisher information, but actually discussing the books and movies was interesting.
Amazing professor! Even though you have to read a lot (4 books + course reader) and watch a few boring movies, it is an awesome class.
I really loved this class. The content was really interesting, and the midterm, essay, and final were not difficult whatsoever. I didnt read any of the material after thanksgiving break bc i got lazy, and still managed to do good. The study guides for the tests are essential if you want to pass or do good, and the essay was graded really easily.
She's a really nice person, but that doesn't translate into her teaching. The content was really interesting, but the tests didn't reflect what was covered in class and was more based on specific or odd details briefly covered in class. My TA was amazing and really helpful, but there was a lack of communication in what needed to be taught.
She shows a movie every class and there are weekly readings to prep you for them. Do the readings and you'll be fine. The 2 midterms are max 20 questions and multiple choice and she gives you a study guide that's practically the test the week before. No final just a project or paper. I'd totally recommend this class
Very passionate and knowledgeable but the TA's know very little about tests to prepare students in section. The essay was graded very easily and the tests themselves were okay. Easy and entertaining class even though her material is quite outdated.
Clearly knows the subject of film and female participation in visual culture. My biggest complaint is that the Midterm had an average of a 73% this quarter and her TAs weren't able to get the questions on the midterm. She didn't curve it or take off the questions that only 3 or 4 percent of the class got correct.
Bobo goes off on a lot of irrelevant tangents which can make it hard to take accurate notes. Difficult to understand sometimes and follow along, babbles a lot. Multiple choice midterm and non accumulative multiple choice final. 1 paper, you get to pick the topic. Attendance taken at lectures and movie showings.
Don't buy the reader. The tests are solely based on the lecture. The final isn't cumulative and I did better on the final then the midterm, and I didn't even read after the midterm. She gets off topic and reads straight from her notes. You have to sign in every lecture which sucks because she's a pretty poor lecturer. Easy A.
Bobo is a little boring at times and goes off topic a bit, but her lectures and the assigned readings really help you gain an understanding of the material. Tests are pretty easy too and the TAs are amazing.
