Hughes has a great understanding of the material and relates it well back to current events so if you attend lecture you don't have to do the readings at all
Material is sometimes difficult to understand but Hughes does a good job at explaining everything. Make sure to attend lecture because everything you need to know is said there although it is not mandatory. Papers are somewhat difficult , make sure you pay attention to details. Section isn't very helpful
HUGHES IS GREAT. I loved this class and the material, definitely an interesting political theory class. 2 papers, both decent if you attend lecture, WHICH IS MANDATORY. He'll tell you all you need to know, only book you have to read is Schmitt. Final is really easy, blue book with approx 4 prompts, 1 of your choice. Zeddy is the best TA. Got an A.
By far the best lecturer I've ever had. He presents an understandable explanation of the readings. Keeps the class engaged
Really understands his students and what he's teaching allowing for us to understand the material way better! He relates his material to OUR real world situations, gets you engaged in class. I haven't been able to miss any lectures, they're too critical in developing your understanding of the readings. Love him, love class!
AMAZING teacher, possibly the best I have had at UCSB. Attending lecture is incredibly helpful because he breaks down difficult material and makes it comprehensible. If you are trying to slack off, then skip the readings BUT ATTEND LECTURE. plus he's entertaining and has a nice speaking voice, its not boring. GREAT PROF!!
Best professor I've had at UCSB. Makes the hard concepts easy to understand and simplified, not to mention interesting. He structures the class into somewhat of a flowed "story line" which helps and gets you engaged. Make good use of his office hours as well as your TA's and you'll do fine. Wish he taught other classes!!!
clearly a super intelligent guy but knows how to simplify the difficult material (and the material is not only difficult, but also boring). pretty entertaining and concise, and he's got that sexy, mature man thing going on. A+!
Hilarious, brilliant, anarchist of a professor. Great teacher, and a truly great guy.
One of the most reading intensive classes I've ever taken, but by far the best professor I've ever had. Hughes is great at simplifying and explaining the difficult material in a way that makes sense. Grade consists of 2 essays, section participation, and final. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but it's hugely helpful in the course.
