Was a good class Marks was plenty helpful!
Lots of hate on here but he was good.
Dr. Marks is a great prof. if a bit of sarcastic. has little patience for students that arent prepared. he was always ready to help me and everyone else that showed up at office hours. I approached him about a personal project and he was more than happy to help me out, even printed 3d parts. Honestly, I like him.
I am not leaving this review for ME6 only as unfortunately he is very involved in the ME department and teaches a lot of other classes. Mean, misogynistic, and condescending. Lectures suck and he moves too quickly, and is not nice when you ask him questions (he lectures you on why you should know the answer already??)
He is outright rude to students when they ask for help. Refuses to provide any sort of assistance in lab or on homework when students are struggling. Expect sarcastic comments and little to no help. His lectures are fine, but his class, and especially lab, is horribly run and extremely disorganized.
I loved this class. There is so much actual engineering. Best class so far!
Good lecture slides and fair tests. Would give a 5 but grading scale for homework was harsh.
Marks is a great professor that teaches very straightforward and makes his expectations clear. At times those expectations (especially on homework) are very strict, but Marks gives opportunities to make up past errors. One of the best teachers you'll find.
This was my first real engineering course at ucsb (and my first time being on campus since we lost last year to covid). I can say Marks puts a lot into the course and his students. He was always willing to help me, even on personal projects (I wanted to add lights to my board - Marks also teaches electronics so he had a lot of advice).
Really just not a great teacher. In over his head. Inconsistent grading and inconsistent application of course policies throughout the class; often seems like things are being made up as we go along. Stubborn and rude to kids, especially when being given constructive criticism.
Wonderful teacher! One of the most available profs in ME and is very helpful during office hours.
Great teacher, good class.
His lectures are very helpful and a little fast, he can be short and snarky sometimes but his grading is really fair and the midterm and final are not too bad.
Great professor, learned a lot through the long hours of homework and lab work. While excessive at first, this was the class I felt most confident about by the end of the quarter. Even without having done the physics prereq prior to the class, I felt the lectures and textbook were great at keeping myself on track. Highly enjoyable experience.
Dr. Marks is easily the most accessible professor I've had. The material isn't always easy but he tries to help his students as best he can. That being said, he's not going to make it any easier on you by giving you the answers but will help you work for it so you can do it yourself in the future. Exams were not very difficult.
Dr. Marks has a lot of passion for engineering, that alone makes the class fun. Homework heavy but he is willing to work with the students to help us succeed. I hope he teaches other classes.
Fun class. There is a lot of homework, but it is graded easy. The instructor definitely wants his students to do well. Would take him again.
The grading scheme seems worked out. It's a hard class but Dr. Marks is a good teacher and cares about his students and their success.
Even though the material is much more difficult than ME 15 the class has an easier grading scale. Marks is really sarcastic but overall a funny guy and has decent lectures. The class takes up a lot of time, with even the labs being very difficult conceptually to understand. Be ready to work.
He is awful. Doesn't try to help students. Laughs gleefully when people tell him how hard his class is. Expect 20 to 30 hours of homework every week if you don't use Chegg, no exaggeration. Unfortunately this review can't really help you since he is the only option at this university.
FANTASTIC lecturer. Class is homework heavy, fast paced, and covers a lot of material, but Dr. Marks' quality of teaching is stellar. He changes his grading criteria each year, ours happened to be no curve, but exams weren't as difficult.
This class is what it means to be in a hard major.
Great lecturer. There is a lot of work but it is important for the major.
He curved the class down, yes I said down, by an entire letter grade. Not only was this class a GPA ruiner, it took as much time as an 8 unit class. Theres a lab and lecture component, both very time-consuming.
