A good one!
Among the best classes I've taken at UCSB. Too bad he doesn't teach here full time. Really gets you interested in anthropology and Africa.
Really excellent instructor. If anthro is your thing, you are learning from not just a great professor but someone who practices his skills in Africa. Dr. Curtis is a very, very intelligent man, learn all you can from him!
a great lecturer, and a class i wish i had not taken in summer, way too much stuff to cover in just 6 weeks, especially when your take 2 classes during one session. I learned a lot, and enjoyed every lecture, my only problem is that we had the same workload as if it were a 12 week course, but i got away with a B.
ANTH 187 is really good. Nice teacher. Really cares about student success. Not sure if the instructor is here anymore.
Took this class a while back. Cool prof and class. A lot of reading, but worth it. I learned more in this class than most I've taken.
I learned so much about Africa in this class. Dr. Curtis is very helpful, totally concerned with students learning concepts, and knows a lot about the subject. His first hand observations and experiences in Africa make it interesting.
This class was hard but worth it. There was quite a lot of reading, frequent quizzes, and pretty lengthy midterm and final, but he was always willing to help and offered extra credit. Very interesting class and teacher.
You have to keep up with reading in this course and there is a lot of it. But, other than that, the class is not too difficult and he is really approachable and nice. Both anthropology and history in the class. Good class.
Best class I've taken at UCSB.
Excellent teacher. Really interesting class. A lot of reading, but worth it. Learned a lot. Second class with Dr. Curtis.
He's terribly insensitive about his student's needs. Gives a lot of extremely difficult, useless, and boring material. The book is a total waste of money. He's a bad teacher, run away from him.
Don't take this class if you don't have to. The book is horrible. The quizzes don't talk about the lectures. He is a hard grader. If you work hard on an assignment and you turn it in late, even if you have an excuse, is horrific. He gives too much homework and expects a lot from you. His lectures are taught as if you are in an honors class.
