Horrible lecturer. Her accent made it difficult to understand and her slides were confusing and included spelling and grammar mistakes. For the in class final we had to "guess" the prompt so I had no idea what to study for the essay. Repeats herself and goes over the same topics over and over. Won't be taking her classes again. Don't recommend.
Not a great lecturer. She tends to be confusing and contradictory. I was happy to be done with this class and I probably wouldn't take another class with her.
Probably one of the classes I have disliked the most. Readings were for the most part interesting but the actual lecture did not live up to them. She does not welcome opinions other than her own and even contradicts the articles that she assigns without realizing it. Would not take another class with her.
Prof. Figueroa is really nice, but her class is pretty dull. Lecture is mandatory (random sign-in sheets throughout the quarter), powerpoints/readings are online. During the first class, she took up the whole time talking about what she was going to talk about throughout the quarter. There is a class field trip, one midterm, and one final.
Very sweet, cute, funny professor. Took cultural anthropology with her and got an A-. Simple tests, but I did read the whole textbook before the final to get an A+. She gave extra credit and wants students to succeed, so makes tests pretty easy. Go to class and follow readings and youll get an A.
This was a terrible class and with the worst instructor I've had at UCSB. The lectures were confusing and didn't relate to the readings or section. It is impossible to understand her, making matters more confusing. Finally, although it was fairly easy, it was just a BORING class that I wouldn't recommended taking with her.
I personally loved this class and may double major in Cult. Anth now. The class is interesting, the essay is fairly easy, and attendence is really not necessary. I missed 8 lectures in a row once and still got an A-. You have to read the book though but it's not a hard read. My TA was Joanna Steinhardt and loved her. Good luck!
Worst class I've ever taken. The concepts are easy but the professor is a terrible teacher. Slides are nearly impossible to read, TAs seemed just as confused about the organization of the class as I was. AVOID at all costs.
Lectures were pointless, since its just a summary of the textbook. Sections didn't help too much, since TAs were confused. Midterm was hard since the questions were poorly worded, although the final was better. A lot of people bombed the research paper because it was unclear on what to aim for and what to write. I don't recommend this class AT ALL.
Her lectures regurgitated book material and her examples/teaching style were incomprehensible. My TA seemed confused on the course plan also. I had to rely entirely on the book.
nice professor.she pretty much wrote an outline for my paper for me, and was very helpful in answering my questions about the paper. at first her accent was difficult to understand, but it got better as the course went on. relatively easy tests, but lots of reading
Don't take this class if she's teaching it. Took this class for my major and I understood course concepts just fine. Lectures were a mess and heavily focused on Latin America, research paper instructions were vague, both exams were subjective, dependent on textbook, and poorly written, and the textbook is ethnocentric and historically inaccurate.
She seems like a nice lady but not a good teacher. Her lectures are unorganized and she mostly just repeats book material. Not very clear about what she expects for the research paper. My TA seemed confused as well.
She is a good professor! Class is not that hard. She does have an accent but it is not bad at all! Powerpoint was helpful! Take this class!
DON'T TAKE HER. I'm a really good student and this class was so confusing. The TAs were all confused as well. Her PowerPoints were terrible, the class didn't flow through out the semester. The paper was really difficult and the midterm question contradicted themselves. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
I was very disappointed with this class and the professor. I could barely ever understand what she was saying because her spanish accent is super thick and she even misspelled basic english words in all her slides. When she didn't know how to say a word in english she would say it in spanish and then ask the class what the word was in english!
this prof has an accent and it is very hard to understand what she is saying and since it is also kind of monotone it just sucks to have to listen and figure out what she is saying. her slides are mostly pictures, takes attendance randomly, grade is based on 3 quizzes, attendance in section & lecture.I wont be taking another class with her
super easy professor. i didnt do ANY of the reading and i got an A on the midterm. her lectures are boring but she puts up the powerpoint online so if you fall asleep its all good. she has an accent which is difficult to understand at time. overall, she's alright.
Figueroa made herself available to her students and likes to get to know them on a personal level. However, her lectures are VERY dull and it is very hard to try to get engaged when the material is boring. She really does care about her students, though.
