Really bad, held a final over our heads the whole time and then didn't put in a grade when grades were due until 2 weeks later. Extremely unclear, got mad when kids left early even though it was a 3 hour class. Nice enough when you try to email her 1 on 1, but ultimately a very bad professor.

Most unprofessional teacher. She took the syllabus off Guachospace so we couldnt see the grading criteria. Held a final over students heads(never happened)Hard to follow lectures. She took it into her own hands against what TAs told us for grading on final projects, went back to grade projects harder resulting in NA grade for two weeks after deadline

Unclear expectations throughout the entire quarter and she rambled in lecture. Constantly told us we might have a final to scare people into reading or going to lecture. Right when grades were due, she decided to regrade everything herself with a "higher level of scrutiny" because of poor attendance and submitted grades 2 weeks late. Such a joke

The least organized, almost rude professor I have ever had. Never knew what was going on in the class. Like others I still have not received a grade. So confused 0/10 recommend.

The most frustrating course of all time. Professor was completely unorganized. Deadlines were not clear and had to get all information from the poor TA. She literally deleted the syllabus halfway through. A possible final was hung above our heads the entire quarter. It has been two weeks since grades were due and they are still not finalized.

Was extremely disorganized, got all information from section. After the quarter ended, she decided that lecture attendance was too low and that she would grade each of the final projects "with a higher standard of scrutiny" and I only got to know this from my TA, after he told us that if we put effort towards our project we would get an A.

I really tried to see the good that all of these reviews were talking about, but I just couldn't. Lecture was disorganized and completely off-topic from the course at times, and Prof. Waid held a fake final exam over our heads all quarter, not clarifying what our final was until week 9. Grades were due on GOLD days ago, but everyone has an NR.

I am so confused by the good reviews. She is kookie and passionate, but I felt her class was disorganized. Course expectations were unclear. I did not know (and still don't) if there will be a formal final exam. I would take a different class if possible.

I had a horrible flu and made plans with her over email. I had just spent an evening in the ER because I was dehydrated and couldn't keep fluids down. In about th 5th email I forgot to call her "Dr prof etc" and she decided like it was the time and place to lecture me over it. Funny how this handily undid any respect or authority her title implies.

One of my favorite professors, I have taken her courses many times. She has such wonderful stories and amazing insights - it is really worth it to read the material before lecture because it really enhances your learning. She is such a kind and caring professor to all of her students and TAs. She is a valuable memory of my experience at UCSB.

Lecture slides were trash, I couldn't take effective notes and I often skipped lecture. Sections are where it's at, and I recommend Pettersson, she's 10/10 amazing. Waid is a caring person, brought pizza for a lecture hall at our final. Bless her heart. Idk if she can teach effectively tho.

The books I read were pretty good, especially in the first half of the class. The bad part was I hardly understood anything she was saying in lecture & I had to go because she puts key terms from lectures on the exam. Not that going to class even helped much because I literally felt like I was trying to interpret another language.

Candace is such a wonderful professor and human. She is so passionate and the books she chooses are absolutely amazing, I actually enjoyed reading all of them and it didn't feel like homework. She really wants everyone to succeed and makes accommodations to make sure those who put in effort do. She also brought in AMAZING guest lecturers!

The lectures can seem a bit confusing at first but its best to just sit back and listen instead of writing everything down. Professor Waid is really nutty but you learn to love it. If you do all the reading and show up to lecture you'll likely finish with over 100%. I really recommend listening to audiobooks instead of just reading.

Candace is probably my favorite English professor at UCSB. The books she chooses are all really good - found my new favorite in this class - and grading is fair. But what sets her apart is her sheer passion, kookiness, and kindness. You won't find another professor like her, so I highly recommend her courses!

Lecture is extremely hard to follow, you have to try very hard not to get lost. She rarely talks about pertinent things and says somewhat offensive things at times. Sections are helpful to understanding of lecture. Candace is also very sweet, she just has no filter- could use an on-stage editor.

Her lecture style isn't for everyone, it comes across as disorganized but if you sit through her tangents she has amazing insight into the texts and passion for Gothic Lit. Lots of short story PDFs, no textbooks to buy, but READ. Midterm and final consists of term IDs and passage IDs which are all given in lecture. Get to write your own story too!

Great professor, really amazing woman. She really makes you read but the novels are good and worthwhile. Crammed 5 books in, in the two days before the final but ended up with an A.

Candace is like a mad genius, and incredibly funny, spirited, and SO enthusiastic about the subject matter. This woman loves what she does and it's so nice to see someone who gets so emotional about what they teach! She's super kind, and the only thing that I would say is that sometimes she isn't too clear about things, but just ask!

Yep, Candace is effing nuts. But, that's what makes her great! Her lectures can be a bit tangential but it's when she goes off topic that you gain some absolutely BRILLIANT insight. She is very helpful and accessible outside of class. It is an incredible opportunity to get to study with her. Go talk to her outside of class and she'll inspire you.

Waid love to go off topic in lectures and isn't very organized when it comes to slides, but is somehow simultaneously interesting/boring, but very helpful outside class. Reading is mandatory (as are all english classes), rely on TA's for help with key terms from lecture and help on the final paper.

Absolutely chaotic and demented - the most life-changing course I have ever taken. Waid is unbelievably kind and personal. Do all the reading - the whole class is based on the readings, and you will read some unbelievably amazing literature. The greatest class I've taken at UCSB.

Waid is amazing. I love her classes. If you go to lecture and listen and engage with the class, you will be fine. She can be confusing, and she does teach in a very "stream of consciousness" sort of way, but she is so insightful that it makes up for it. My recommendation is to record the lecture(s), and listen to them later to glean the main info.
