The best teacher at UCSB.
Van Koppen is the most helpful and best Chem teacher at UCSB. Don't start with any other teacher or you won't get the foundation you need to continue.
Her lectures usually kept me awake, and she seemed to want everyone to do well, but I went to her office hours (more than once) and she was not helpful at all.
I've sat in on her lectures. She's like Paris Hilton - way overrated!
Go see Petra after exams! She is more than willing to give extra points if you can argue anything.
Van Koppen was awesome! Her lectures are really easy to follow and her teaching methods were very helpful. Test were HARD though!
I have had her all year. let me say, shes is gives difficult exams. However, she really wants her students to succeed...so she does experiments in class alot. Which is entertaining. GO TO CLASS OFTEN! ENROLL IN CLAS with Terri, shes great!!!
Van Koppen is the best professor at UCSB! She truly cares about teaching and helping you understand the material. Don't be discouraged by the difficult tests because she has a great curve. Go to lecture & do the homework and you will do great in her class!
She's very enthusiastic and hyper so you don't fall asleep. She is very clear and easy to understand, so if the book confuses you she clears it all up. She really cares about students and wants everyone to do well. She talks about her having ADD and by attending her lectures its evident she has it.:

Van Koppen knows what she is talking about. i respect her for her intelligence. i dont think it is fair that all the other professors tests are easier... she is a good teacher but not so great that her students should be able to do harder tests than everyone else
Everyone swears that she is more intresting than the other gen chem professors but she is just as boring. Goes over problems rather than lecturing so its easy to learn how to do the problems to pass the class but you dont learn why it works. Boring lecturer.
Van Koppen is amazing. She isn't an easy professor. However, she keeps my interest, does cool things with fire in lecture, has great handwriting, cares whether or not her students understand, is friendly and bubbly , and is immensely knowledgable. I had zero interest in chemistry before her class.
Well i actually don't have Van Koppen, but i do sit in her class whenever i can. And i must say, she IS a great professor! i regret not signing up for her as my professor. So if you know what's good for you, don't be like me! (Sign up for her!) :)

A great teacher who really takes time out to help you understand. She's very enthusiastic and loves what she does. Do the hw and example problems and if u dont understand she's more than willing to help. ***If you take CLAS, don't take it with ***** b/c ***** is pretty discouraging.
Van Koppen is AMAZING. Such a good lecturer, very knowledgable, includes demos in her class, and actually takes the time out to email info to her class. Don't even think about taking the Chem 1 series with another professor, not if you want to learn.

She is one of the best lecturers on this campus! Tests are hard but there is a pretty fair curve and she is always willing to help students. Take her for Gen Chem! You will learn so much and enjoy the class!
She made me love chem. But after that, I got Prof ****, then it's all down hill with chem.
