Hands down best writing teacher in UCSB. He actually cares about his students way more than you think. Just AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. Classes are mandatory, which you should be going to anyways.
seriously best writing teacher you can ask for. I normally don't post reviews about professors but he's really the best. he actually cares about how you improve on writing and enhances all types of writing you will need in college.
Joiner is by far my favorite professor at UCSB. He is kind, helpful, and approachable. He doesn't demand an extreme amount of work but he does require his students' best effort. Definitely take his class!!
How do I express the radical glory that is Mike Joiner? This guy is a modern hero. Let's be real, Writing 2 is one of the most painful things an undergrad can be subjected to--unless we're talking about Mike. This class was GREAT and had super realistic goals. If you want to see some high-level wizardry, take it! On a scale from 1 to yeah, YEAH!
Mike is the best! He cares so much about the students and is always there to help! Definitely take Writing 2 with him. He makes a boring class way more enjoyable and something I actually looked forward too
Take Mike for any Writing course possible!!! He is so young and chill, not to mention super nice. He becomes your friend and really cares to get to know each and every student and offers the best help he possibly can. His grading can b slow but its worth it because he gives u very detailed feedback about how u can improve your writing. Take him!!!
Super friendly, super chill. Talk to him about music! Will help with your revisions if you ask him to. Kind of slow on grading though.
Mike was an AWESOME teacher. He kept the class super casual and was always available for help via text or email. I came into Writing 2 dreading it, but I ended up with an easy A and I think I even learned a thing or two!
Mike guided us throughout the course and basically breaks down how to get an A in the class. As long as you get an A on the final portfolio your overall grade will be the same. He's also very personable and funny since he's young. Cool dude.
I absolutely LOVED Mike. I don't like writing that much but my writing definitely improved and he makes it alot easier since he is such a good teacher. I got an A in the class by going to his office hours and working on my papers with him. I still keep in touch and had him write me a letter of rec recently. Take him if at all possible!!
Loved taking this class with Joiner. He made it fairly enjoyable and straightfoward. Attend lectures, book is not needed. Go to extra credit events whenever possible - they help alot (~half a letter grade)
Attendance isn't mandatory, but highly recommended. He outlines exactly what's covered in the tests, and you're expected to print these outlines and take them to lecture and complete them. If you do this, and study the outlines, you'll get an easy A. The papers are alright, but my TA was an unnecessarily tough grader which kinda screwed my grade
subject matter is a lillte boring but he makes class so fun. he knows hes a cute nerd and he plays off that ;)
Mike's passion makes the class wonderful. He keeps it entertaining with video clips and a pretty silly but awesome sense of humor. The second essay we did was also really creative and enjoyable, but I do wish the class was a bit more challenging. Mike is great!
He's fun, class is enjoyable, and he tries to make the material as interesting as possible. Love him. Didn't love the class, or my TA, and it's not just about the music for the record...you actually have to remember historical facts and biographies of the composers. write your papers like a 3rd grader, keep up on the music, and you'll get an A.
Don't even bother buying the book, never looked at it once and got an A. You only need the listening CDs. Definitely go to all the lectures and take notes since those are what the tests are on. Funny professor that actually tried to relate to his students. Fun class with hilarious videos and clips!
He was a great teacher! Just go to class and take all the lecture notes down and thats what will be on the test. Easy class if you study. Joiner was interesting with the videos and really cute.
Joiner is absolute perfection! He is super cute and funny and super nice! I highly recommend this class!! I never read the book and still managed an Aplus. As long as you listen and take down ALL the notes he gives you you'll be fine! He is super CUTE!! I was devastated on the last day.. I wish I could take another class with him!! :D
Mike is great!!! He is super entertaining and brings a ton of live musicians to play during class. Tests and essays were really easy as long as you went to class. Absolutely no need to buy the text book, he gives you all the info in lecture.
Attend his class and write down the notes. Extremely easy class and fun, he defintely knows how to keep the class entertained. He gives you a study guide before the midterm and final, USE IT!!! Defintely recommend taking this class :)
easily my favorite class/professor for winter quarter. I highly recommend this class with Joiner. He's funny, pretty intelligent, and simply makes the class fun. I hope to have him in a future class! :D
Cool guy, good sense of humor, very chill TA. He does go by the book however and will grade your papers with rather strict parameters. Easy to sidetrack with talk about sports or the trumpet.
