Difficult to understand, and not very organized. I never really understood where she was going in lecture, but luckily my TA was far more organized and able to clear up most of my confusion. The midterm was in week 3 and half of it was MCQs taken directly from the weekly quizzes, the other half short response - piece of cake if you pay attention.

Prof. Zhao is clearly passionate about the topic but can sometimes go off on tangents or be unclear. This class is much more difficult in-person than online. Be prepared to spend a lot of time prepping for the midterm and final; you are expected to memorize detailed information about 60 or so terms. Pros: grading criteria is extremely clear.

I don't know why the course gets much more complicated when it's taught in person: quiz + midterm + final + project. From feedback of my friend who took this course online, there were only quiz + project. Exam contains MC + paragraph-response question -- be prepared to remember tons of information if you want to get an A. (much harder than online)

I don't think she actually listens when I ask her questions because her answers are always not to my questions but other things

Each week we had two lectures (an hour each), reading, and two quizzes (5 questions each). As long as you watch the lectures, it's an easy A. Midterm was a group project and the final was an individual project. They don't take that much time to do. Also, I went to office hours once and she is the sweetest person ever. Highly recommend taking her!!!

Super easy class! 2 pre-recorded lectures a week (around 1hr each), 2 quizzes a week, about 100 pgs reading a week, 1 group project for mid-term, and 1 individual project for final. No final midterm and test. I felt like the lectures were a little boring but easy to understand. Her class was very manageable and an easy A.

At least online, this class is extremely lecture heavy with 2 untimed lecture quizzes a week. Some topics were a bit lengthy but as a whole, the professor conveyed the information in a way that was meaningful and informative and I got a lot out of the class despite the lengthy lectures, documentaries, and readings. Sections were also great!

Her lectures are super long and kinda boring, especially when she gives us hour long documentaries. There are two quizzes a week, which aren't too bad but sometimes the questions can be tricky, but they aren't timed so you can just go back to rewatch the lectures. One group project for the midterm and an individual project for the final.

Her lectures online are long but they are easy to understand. Usually two a week followed by two five question quizzes. Very informative. That being said they do get boring just because of the length and all the information.

Professor Zhao was amazing, I took this class with little background in the subject, but she really made it an interesting learning experience. The class was research based and largely self motivated, but she also took the time to always make sure her students had what they needed. If you take her class, she really strives to help you succeed.

Professor Zhao is extremely, extremely passionate about Asian American history and it's clear with her lectures. She's always available out of class and encourages students to come talk to her. She bought some students boba too. There is a lot of material and a lot of reading along with, but do the work and you will do fine.

Coming from someone who loves history and is interested in the Asian American experience, Professor Zhao was not particularly engaging or thought-provoking. Memorization based... know your key terms.

Slides are online, but go to lecture for 5 pop quizzes. Lots of memorization and lots of dense reading. Personally did not do most of the readings or read the books. Study the discussion questions from section. Go to study sessions before midterm and final. Go to section - focuses on important takeaways for quizzes/midterm/final.

This class could have been interesting, but her lectures were boring. She would rush through slides when she ran out of time. Gave pop quizzes even though most of the class never showed up. My TA made this class bearable. A GE course shouldn't be this much work.

ASAM1 is very easy to pass if you do the reading and show up to lecture. She gives a study guide for the midterm and final. If you like history I highly recommend this class, it's super interesting and doesn't require much studying other than the readings

Didn't put much effort in as far as reading and studying, but still survived! Midterm, final, an extra credit opportunity, and a few pop quizzes (only one multiple choice question on each.) She provided thorough study guides which consisted of the prompts and vocab that would be on the exams! Prof Zhao is super nice and passionate about her work.

Professor Zhao is the best! I think I just didn't enjoy her class as much as I should have because I don't really like history classes that much. Her lectures are very thorough yet concise, and imma be real, she's like a real life Edna Mode. I love her

I'm not a history major and took this class for a GE, and I don't think this class is that difficult to follow. I attend every lecture and don't find it necessary to do all of the reading assigned; you really only need to do one or the other. Prof. Zhao is not that hard to follow as long as you make somewhat of an effort to listen and take notes.

You learn about the Asian American history from the different ethnic backgrounds, and get a viewpoint on each through readings and lectures. The lectures are interesting, but sometimes can be a bit dry.

I absolutely loved Associate Dean Zhao! She was a fantastic professor. I took her Honors Section and she always brought us snacks. She genuinely cared about our feedback and asked how she could adjust the class to make it easier for the students. Her class made me very interested in AS AM studies and she is such a great resource.

While Professor Zhao was difficult to understand at sometimes (with her accent), her expectations and lectures were very very clear. There is an insane amount of reading though. Usually 100-200 per lecture. She did give review sheets before the exams. Sections were pointless but mandatory for attendance.

TONS of reading. There's only 1 midterm and the final, so if you fail either, you are screwed. The tests are the same format: MC, short answers, and 1 essay. TA was SUPER helpful because her lectures are long and boring. She puts her lectures online but it helps to attend the lecture and take notes since she goes into more detail.

More than enough assigned reading, but you could probably scrape by if you listen in lecture and section and skim through the various books. Lectures can be a bit dull. Slides are always posted online though. The class doesn't require much thinking, just memorization.
