My favorite professor at UCSB! He made biochem (a notoriously difficult subject) so much easier to understand. His lectures were so engaging and honestly pretty entertaining. His lectures are the only lectures that I can attend in person and not fall asleep. Such a funny and personable guy. Anyone would be lucky to learn biochem from Rothman. GOAT
I liked Rothman a lot. It's not his fault the material has to be rushed since there's so much to cover and little class time. I thought his exams were fair and his expectations for them were pretty clear. He gives lots of practice problems and old exams to study. He makes the material digestible even though it's difficult w/ well-organized lectures
Great lecturer, however, the material was somewhat rushed in my opinion. Professor Rothman was gracious enough to add in extra credit and to give us a decent curve. Besides the ridiculously hard final, the midterms were doable if you study enough.
Rothman's class is pretty challenging. He focuses very heavily on lectures and doesn't make his expectations for what you need to know clear. His exams were toughs well with not much of a curve given. He is not horrible by any means, just not my favorite professor ever. I think he does truly care, I just couldn't seem to learn the material.
Joel is a good lecturer and he makes some good dad jokes. He's really helpful in OH and is a really nice person overall. The average was way lower than the top 8 students so he offered us extra credit which was really nice of him. The final was lowkey hard tho ngl. The midterm difficulty was understandable IMO.
I really enjoyed this class! Material was challenging, but Rothman is a great lecturer. He made a very difficult subject manageable and interesting, but you have to work for it. Problem sets and past exams are super helpful in determining what information is important. From there, I would study the hell out of his lectures and you'll be fine.
Professor Rothman is 100% my favorite professor that I have had at UCSB. He really takes careful consideration in the organization of his often difficult teaching concepts and puts immense effort into making them entertaining. He is also a really cool guy to talk to. Highly recommend taking this class!
Made us go in person just to take exams, half the class failed and received no curve. The test questions were terrible and we fell behind in class due to his constant cringe jokes. Take the class with Wilton if you can.
My course was online, and you could tell he still wasn't completely used to it but the dude can really teach! He always takes into account ppl's questions during lecture and is super approachable at office hours. Study the lectures hard and ASK questions! Exams are tough but doable, I did better each exam. Push hard early if you want that A, GL! :D
Graded 100% on 3 exams. Dull lectures. Difficult exams very different from material in lecture. Tests you on tiny random details. Unwilling to accommodate students in situations out of their control. No curve. Grades exams harshly. Midterm on week 9. Added an extra lecture because he was too far behind. Do the problem sets, they help with exams.
Funny and chill dude, great professor. The material is all in lecture, so make sure you write down EVERYTHING he says, no matter how small. Details matter big time in this class. If you need a deeper source of information, the internet was more helpful than the textbook.
Gives 3 exams, 2 midterms and a final. The final and the midterms are weighted the same. Dr. Rothman is an awesome professor, super funny, and extremely accommodating. He does all that he can to ensure that his students are successful. If you have taken 109c, this class is almost an exact repeat, so its very easy. Curves the class.
one of my favorite professors at UCSB! you definitely have to take his biochem class. as long as you go over lectures thoroughly and pay attention in class, you'll do just fine.
Rothman is a very good lecturer, and is very accessible outside of class. He really seems like he wants his students to succeed in this course. The exams aren't too tricky, if you go to lecture and stay on top of studying for this course, it won't be hard at all to pass and do well.
Rothman is an exceptional professor for biochem. The class is a lot of material, and going to class will definitely help with understanding the topics. The book is optional and only helps to give extra details on things from lecture. His tests aren't easy but aren't too difficult, it's just a matter of studying the material because there is a lot.
Dr. Rothman is very inspiring. He is a great lecturer, and often mention current science news in his lectures to keep it interesting. He is very talkative and supportive outside of class.
Great professor. Very funny too. Got to lecture and you will be rewarded. Does not curve much. Memorize all slides and things said and read the textbook and you will do okay. Not super easy material but the professor presents it well. Section helps as well.
Great professor! Lectures are very clear and organized. He's very personable and truly wants his students to do well. *Go to his office hours- he's really helpful when you show the effort. Tests are incredibly hard for the material learned in lecture. Learn every word/concept on every slide very well. Then you can do well in the course.
Rothman is incredibly clear and organized. His slides are top notch and his problem sets (which he posts on gaucho each week) are good practice of what you need to know for exam. He gives you clear direction on what to do to be successful in class: go to every lecture, review, do problem sets. That's it. He made something as dull as biochem OK!!
One of the best professors at UCSB. Textbook is useless, so must go class. He will try to trick you on the exam, but the class is essentially a repeat of Chem 109C so it's easy. He gives you problem sets and 2 old exams to study on. Great class.
Amazing professor! Lectures are always entertaining. The class is very well organized and he is clear about his expectations. He's very reasonable about the detail of info you need to know. He makes it easy to succeed by posting practice problems & exams. Do these and you will do well. Textbook is not required.
Rothman is hands down probably one of my favorite professors and that's coming from someone who hates chemistry and had this class at 8am. The way he lectures definitely gets the point across effectively so you don't feel confused or bored. He's direct in what he expects from you and I felt as though his tests were very fair. Prof Low ruined it tho
Dr. Rothman is an awesome professor! He's the chair of the department so he's very busy, but if you go to his office hours he's great. The class itself is straightforward and not difficult, but you must work to get an A. The problem sets are necessary for exam practice. Also, his wine-making jokes are hilarious!
Very straightforward in lectures and on tests. He will not try to trick you. He gives practice problems and practice tests, so if you study all of them (which isn't that much compared to other classes) you will do fine.
