Graded by two papers, midterm, and final exam. Exams were definitely tricky, so study up and ask questions. Definitely attend lecture, as slides alone aren't enough to be prepared for the exams. She's super caring, kind, and accessible. Grading criteria is clear for papers, and asking the TA for help is a good way to be prepared.
Dr. Afifi is great! She cares a lot about her students. We had a midterm and a final (non cumulative) and two essays.
She really cares about her students, papers and tests questions are fair, she makes her lectures easy to follow
She's amazing!! Super caring and makes class extremely interesting. Take her class
Material was interesting but I didn't like how the assignments were weighted. 60% of your grade is based off essays (final research paper, article critique, essay on midterm) and IMO were graded harshly. Exams cover a lot of material, and are application based, but easy if you study and attend lecture. A's on both exams but B+ in class bc of essays
I enjoyed Professor Afifi a lot in Comm 151. She is so genuine and personable, and you can tell she really loves what she teaches and cares for her students. My only thing is that I feel like you are expected to cover waaaay too much content compared to other classes and have it all memorized for tests. Other than that, she is a great teacher.
Midterm is challenging. The average score is quite low! The lecture is funny but a few tricky questions in the exam. Most multiple choices are like "A, B, C are correct" or "All of the above" which increase the difficulty. The short essay was strictly graded. You need to come up with well-rounded statement and good elaboration in limited time.
Professor Afifi was amazing for Family Comm!!! I learned so much in this course about the family dynamic, parent-child relationship development, and gained a lot of useful tips for healthy/happy relationships. Best and most beneficial Comm class in my opinion. Take this course!
Took her on last summer. The class content is super interesting, and her lectures are great.
Best professor I've ever had, hands down. I never leave reviews but I just had to for Afifi. If you have the chance to take any of her classes, do it! Her lectures are relatable and applicable in real life. She's super nice and you can tell she's really passionate about what she does!
I took her family comm and relational comm last year. I LOVE her lectures and personality too. If you study, you can get a good grade. Study hard and enjoy her amazing lectures!
Afifi has been my favorite teacher at UCSB so far. She's so friendly and approachable. lectures are always entertaining. If you go to class, and pay attention you'll pass
Best prof I've had here Funny, engaging, interesting material, and fair grader. Her classes usually have a midterm, a final, and a paper or 2 but it's all based on interesting material that you apply to your own life Had her for Relational Comm and Family Comm
Very friendly. I took her 3 week family comm summer class so we had 2 exams and a paper. A lot of the material on the test was straight from the powerpoint slides, which she provided. I found the tests to be challenging.
Great professor!
Affifi is hands down my favorite professor. I would recommend her Conflict class and Family class to anyone. You do need to do the work, but the tests and class are fair. Take her class before she leaves UCSB! You won't regret it!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I love her, she is perfect. Her family comm class is so interesting, and she's so nice and understanding! There were two papers, one 3 page, one 7, which was kind of difficult but REALLY interesting. Her tests were straight forward and not tricky! She is by far one of the best professors in the comm department :)
Prof. Afifi is a quirky woman. She is very hot and has a good sense of humor. She makes class fun by telling stories about her family and engaging her students. Attendence is mandatory (you can only miss 2 classes without penalty). 2 papers and 2 tests. Papers are kind of tough. Tests are easy. Book is not necessary. Would recommend for COMM majors
Loved the class, but she was a tough professor. Engaging and helpful, but tests were difficult and the paper required hours of work (interviewing both parents plus outside research). Read the textbook and all articles in order to pass the tests. Attendance is mandatory and she gives out extra credit.
She's a cheery woman who is very open to discussion in class. Lecture can be boring at times since she talks a lot. Midterm is okay if you study her Powerpoint slides. There is a small essay and also a major turning point paper worth nearly half of your grade that requires interviewing your parents and filling out graphs. Class overall is okay
Loved this class
Tammy is such an awesome professor. MY FAVE! Her tests were not that bad if you attend lecture and skim through the readings. The topics are interesting so it helps. LOVE HER..GO TO OFFICE HOURS and chat! She is funny & interesting.
She is a very nice and fun person, but I didn't think her class was necessarily easy. Her assignments take a lot of work (i.e., in-depth interviews of your family, videotaping a conflict, etc.), however you do gain a lot from her classes!
Absolutely loved this class! She is an amazing professor (best I've had thus far). Encourages class discussion and is always willing to help or just chat. Material is super interesting and applicable to life which is a plus. Tests are fair... pretty easy if you take really good notes and skim the reading. 2 tests (final not cumulative) and 2 papers
