The class is pretty interesting but mostly boring. He is an **** when it comes to sleeping and phones going off, he will embarass someone in front of the whole class. Basically the quizes for the reading are impossible but the TA's are awesome so thats what helped me out.

The movies we watched were really helpful. It was weird that they were all about busses, but even still, we do exercises trying to identify the terms he explains at the beginnings of classes and they really nail the concepts into your head. All you really have to remember is who said what, and be able to give an example of the concepts on the tests

This man is the best professor I've ever had. He is a great lecturer. His class contains maybe too much reading and he doesn't use traditional textbooks. Some students might be frustrated that his lectures cover very broad topics but if you go to discussion you should know what to focus on.
Not fit for teaching an into class. Teaches soc 1 as if it were an upper division class on labor and busses. Does not cover the broad spectrum of Soc, I still have no idea what sociology covers as a field. Tests and quizes are incredibly hard. Attending every class won't even help you, all he does is preach and show movies about bus lines.
Lipsitz is the worst professor I’ve ever had in my life. His lectures are poorly organized and are completely void of content. His assigned readings are poorly connected to the subject and are tedious and repetitive; several of them also are blatantly **** and offensive. I passed the class by attending section and my own outside research.
Dr Lipsitz was one of the best professors that I've had since I've been at UCSB! He is very considerate with his grading and he NEVER once made class complicated. He makes class really interesting and he there''s ALWAYS something that EVERYONE could relate to in the class!
One of the Best professors i've ever had! Very inspiring. he's very knowledgeable and incredibly intelligent. If you don't learn something valuable from taking his class, then you are vein and too self-interested. Great speaker. Overall, outstanding experience.
Amazing Professor!!! Great readings...a bit too much, but interesting. Open to criticism and encourages discussion. Do the readings, study for midterm and final and you should be good.
Great Professor!! Interesting in lecture & clear in his expectations. It's a normal black studies class so expect to read alot and write alot. You'll get your monies worth. Grading is fair & he is very helpful by giving comments on term paper so you can revise. readings need to be done on time or you'll fall behind. Overall great experience!!
He thinks he is the best thing that ever happened to the world, and his class is all that matters. The readings are very dry and there's way too much. He is also unfair and subjective in his grading. He can make you feel very stupid, even if you are smart. I was actually very excited about this class before taking it, but he ruined my interest
He is intersting but unclear in leacture. He like's to talk about concepts on a very broad scale, which makes it almost impossible to take notes.
Very great professor, I am about to take another one of his classes BL ST 6 CIVIL RIGHTS he is a very good speaker and knows what he is talking about. For anyone majoring in black studies, you have to take at least one of his classes. there is a lot of reading but its interesting, understandable, and is actually used and talked about in class.
One of the best professors I've ever had! He is very passionate about the material, and although there is too much reading, the books he assigns are very interesting. Fair grader. Very good speaker!

this guy is the best speaker i've ever had and super passionate about the material. you might not agree with his politics, i'm on the right, but he is open to hearing anything you have to say, and will give you constructive criticism at the same time that he takes yours... highly recommended
